bManager 1.0 is a new contact management package from AppMac that can handle address/phone information, to-do lists, and incorporates e-mail functionality. The Carbonized tool also includes secure access password protection.
Black and Bleu 4.0 is an application that provides a comprehensive collection of Macintosh OS error codes available anywhere (well over 5,000). The database also includes a detailed analysis and suggestions for dealing with many of these errors. Version 4 adds hundreds of new error codes and Carbonization.
MacNN reader Dave Fynan notes an article in the St. Petersburg Times detailing Apple's new retail location which will be opening at the International Plaza in Tampa, FL next month. Author Jules Allen says "Elegant computer shopping is coming to Tampa."
Over the weekend we noted Apple's discontinuation of the Customer Quality Feedback program, retail store plans for the Chicago area, managerial changes at the FireWire Trade Association, and incompatibility problems in OS X 10.1. Software updates included REALdb Tools 1.0b1, textSOAP 3.0, and new iMate drivers for OS X.
GenArts has introduced Sapphire Plug-ins 1.1, which expands the visual effects tool set with support for Avid Media Composer and Avid Xpress system users on Macintosh hardware. The latest release also adds effects and feature enhancements.
MacUser UK reports that Apple is offering a beefed-up software bundle with the iMac available to UK and Ireland customers including the following additions: Tomb Raider - The Last Revelation, Sim City 3000 and Escape From Monkey Island, Route 66 Europe 2000 atlas, Ultralingua multilingual dictionaries, the Encyclopaedia of Science, the Adiboo Environment educational tools for children and the Star Wars Pit Droids. The offer is only available through the Apple Store and select authorized resellers.
FileMaker and Macromedia plan to demonstrate new ways to integrate FileMaker Pro 5 Unlimited, a workgroup database over the Web, with Dreamweaver UltraDev 4, a visual web authoring application, at the annual FileMaker Developer's Conference. The conference is currently underway in Orlando, Florida through August 15th, and 1200 users are expected to attend.
Canon has introduced a line-up of ten new digital imaging products for the Fall, including five printers offering new Microfine droplet technology, two multi-function devices featuring individual ink-tanks, and three scanners with "Z-Lid" expansion.
URL Manager Pro 2.8 has been released in beta form, adding bug fixes, Opera support, URL Access usage, Japanese character set support, and browser specification to the popular bookmark management application.
August Software has begun shipping a full functional, single-user version of ODBC Router, the company's Open Data Base Connectivity (ODBC) solution for the Mac. Previous releases were available in multi-user configurations only. The new release is priced at $99 and is available immediately.
Suck It Down 1.1 is an Internet utility that streamlines the retrieval of images from web sites. The new release adds Mac OS X support, asynchronous downloads, an update check reminder, a skip URL command, and PDF support.
MacNN reader Zac Cohen reports on two new Apple retail outlets in Massachusetts. "The Cambridge store is in the Cambridge Galleria, and it is next to American Eagle Outfitters. The Peabody store will be opening very soon, either the 25th or 30th, and is in the spot where the Warner Brothers store was in the Northshore mall."
The Minneapolis Star Tribune has published an article discussing Apple's new retail store at the Mall of America. The report includes comments from Ron Johnson, Apple's senior vice president of retail, who says "We're not competing with our existing retailers. This store is about growing our base of non-Macintosh customers."
