Handspring cuts prices

Handspring has cut prices across its PDA line, discounting the 2MB Visor by $20 to $129, the 8MB Visor Deluxe by $30 to $169, the 8MB Visor Platinum by $50 to $199 and the slim Visor Edge by $100 to $299. All price cuts are effective immediately.

Apple leaks iPhoto details

Apple may have inadvertently leaked details about its forthcoming image editing application, dubbed iPhoto Studio. "Discover iPhoto Studio, the perfect solution for the high volume requirements of professional photographers. Combined with a Power Mac G4, iPhoto Studio lets you focus on the quality of your images by helping you manage your workflow for greater productivity and profitability," reads an Apple description of an upcoming solutions seminar taking place tomorrow in New York. Unlike previous mentions of iPhoto, which Apple claims were in reference to a third-party product, the current seminar invitation adds "Featured products include two Apple-based digital photography solutions: iPhoto Studio and Studio in a Bag." [update: this story appears to be in error, as the seminar features a product from another company]

Computer Admin Pro released

Computer Admin Pro replaces Computer Admin 2.2 as CG Software's help desk and asset management software package. The tool allows hardware and software tracking, secure access to information, and generation of reports. Computer Admin Pro is available for Mac OS 7.6.1 or higher, and is priced at $149 for a single-user version.

AppMac updates apps, releases iGo 1.0

AppMac has released updates for two of its applications and released a third: nQuick 2.0 is a completely revamped release of the tool used to manage texts, notes, passwords, serials, and to do lists; iWarning 1.1 fixes bugs in the utility for checking multiple clients and accounts for new e-mail; iGo 1.0 is a new program that manages URLs outside of a browser environment.

APC Tracker aids UPS users

APC Tracker is a new utility that interfaces with UPS hardware from APC (which provide emergency power during an electrical failure) to power off a Macintosh client computer regularly once power is interrupted. The software is the first of its kind on the Mac platform, as this capability was previously restricted to Windows and Linux users.

Schiller, Jobs to officially keynote Seybold

Though previously confirmed, Key3Media has officially announced that Apple's vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, Philip Schiller, will present the day's opening keynote at Seybold San Francisco 2001 on Tuesday, September 25 at the Moscone Center. Schiller, will be joined by Steve Jobs briefly, via sattelite. "If it weren't for Apple, the graphic arts and publishing industries wouldn't be as advanced as they are today ... We are thrilled to have Phil and Steve on our roster in San Francisco," said Gene Gable, president, Seybold Seminars and Publications.

Sony offers new CD-RW drives

Sony has introduced four new CD-RW drives with out-of-the-box Macintosh compatibility and software bundles. The new 24X/10X/40X CD-RW drives are available with internal ATAPI (EIDE), as well as external USB 2.0 and IEEE1394/FireWire interfaces. Sony will offer the first CD-RW drive with a Memory Stick media slot in the CRX175M/A1 internal model. The Sony CD-RW ATAPI internal drive will be available in October while the Memory Stick model will be available in November with estimated U.S. retail prices of $179 and $229 respectively. The USB 2.0 and FireWire external drives will also be available in November, with prices of $279 and $299 respectively.

Resonext unveils new AirPort chip specs

Resonext has key architectural details on its upcoming 5GHz WLAN chipsets, which will power the successor to the wireless 802.11a standard, used in Apple's AirPort. The new 5 Ghz standard is expected to boast transfer speeds upwards of 50 megabits per second - Apple's current implementation is limited to 11 megabits per second. "We have successfully engineered key technology components that will enable 5 GHz WLAN platform scalability, investment longevity, and affordable deployment cost," said David Tahmassebi, president and CEO of Resonext Communications.

Sony ships Bluetooth-enabled DV cameras

Sony has unveiled two new digital camcorders with Bluetooth wireless networking technology built in. Bluetooth will allow the two video camcorders, the DV format DCR-PC120 and the new MICROMV format DCR-IP7, to send moving and still digital images to both computers and other devices like wireless phones. The DCR-PC120 will ship in September for under $1500, while the DCR-IP7 will begin shipping on Octotber 10th for $1,577.

Apple and Adobe confirm spots for MacFest

Both Adobe and Apple have confirmed their spots for the upcoming MacFest road show, which will take place in Leeds and Birmingham, UK on September 4th and 6th respectively. Apple will show off DVD Studio Pro and Final Cut Pro, while Adobe will run seminars on GoLive, Photoshop, Illustrator, and other apps.

HP to unveil first DVD+RW drive

Hewlett Packard is preparing to launch the first DVD+RW (which allows DVDs to be written, erased, and re-written) drive which will cost $599 when it debuts in September. HP's dvd100i will use media that costs $15.99 per disc, and will carry a re-write speed of 2.4x. The new drive is also capable of re-writing CDs.
