XtremeMac today released AirPlay, a new FM transmitter designed especially for Apple's iPod (mini). The company says that AirPlay is "the first and only" iPod-powered FM Transmitter that works across the full FM frequency band without the need to install software and allows iPod users to play audio wirelessly from their iPod through any FM radio. AirPlay features an easy-to-read illuminated digital frequency display, which turns off automatically after tuning to conserve iPod battery power and automatically powers off when not in use. "AirPlay is a marvel of miniaturization, packing more features and better performance into a smaller package than any other FM transmitter." It is designed to work universally with all dock-connector and click-wheel iPods.
Apple today released iTunes 4.7.1, a security update to iTunes which it says resolves a problem where malicious playlists can cause iTunes to crash and could execute arbitrary code. Noting that iTunes supports several common playlist formats, Apple says "iTunes 4.7.1 fixes a buffer overflow in the parsing of m3u and pls playlist files that could allow earlier versions of iTunes to crash and execute arbitrary code." The update is available for Mac OS X and Windows XP/2000. Apple today also released iPod Updater 2005-01-11, which includes iPod shuffle Software 1.0 for iPod shuffle. iPod Updater 2005-01-11 also contains the same iPod software included in iPod Updater 2004-11-15 for all other iPod models.
Apple and Volvo today announced two iPod connectivity options for Volvo's entire 2005 US model line, allowing iPod users to listen to their music collection through their Volvo audio system. Mercedes-Benz USA also annouced an iPod Integration Kit for Mercedes-Benz, offering full iPod music navigation through the Mercedes-Benz audio system as well as the ability to select music using artist, album or playlist with the multifunction controls on the steering wheel and the integrated multifunction display on their instrument cluster. The iPod Integration Kit ($300 plus installation) for Mercedes-Benz will debut this April in the US with the newly redesigned 2006 Mercedes-Benz M-Class, and for most other 2005 and 2006 models later this year.
Speck Products (Booth 433) today unveiled ToughSkin, "the first" ruggedized iPod skin. Designed with shock-absorbing, rubberized bumpers and a tear-resistant plastic skin, the ToughSkin provides active iPod users with a unique, personalized cover that can withstand the dust, knocks and scratches associated with even the most extreme lifestyle, according to the company. The ToughSkin cover fits all fourth generation iPods and will soon be available for iPod mini as well. Its slim, protective case features ruggedized bumpers, detachable belt clip, and screen and scroll wheel covers. It is available in five colors (clear, black, blue, red, and orange) for $35.
