Apple releases iTunes 4.9

Apple today released iTunes 4.9, a major update to its audio application for organizing/sharing music, purchasing songs, and managing iPod music. "With iTunes 4.9, you can now browse and subscribe to podcasts from within the iTunes Music Store. Podcasts are frequently updated radio-style shows downloadable over the Internet. You can also transfer podcasts to iPod, for listening on the go." It is available via the Mac OS X software update. Readers note that once iTunes 4.9 is installed, a new "Podcasts" heading appears under Source; however, there are not any Podcast Directories currently appearing.

Podcasts are nice...

06/28, 04:50am reply

Podcasts are nice if you have a good setup for them. For me, I use iPodderX on my old G4 Cube to grab the topics I'm interested in, then a sync program to get them onto my empeg (Rio Car) player. I can then listen to talk radio I am interested in during my commute, and have full control over the playback.

Think of it like Tivo for radio, but instead of recording off the generally big corporate off the air stations, it gets content from anyone willing to create it. There are enough podcasts out there that one is likely to be something you enjoy.

iTunes 4.9 is now simply bringing this to the masses.

Now we can all start waiting on iTunes 5, and hoping it brings hierarchal playlists. If they do that, and bring that to the iPod as well, I might consider an iPod to replace my Rio Karma. Well, that, and crossfading/gapless playback on the iPod would be nice. And ethernet. I know I won't get them all, but it would be a nice start with the hierarchal bit.

Cool

I love this so far, but wish Air America's podcasts were working, too. A little more time is all that's required, I'm sure. For polish. This is going to be perfect for regularly downloading On the Media, and I've subscribed to Elvis Mitchell's and Harry Shearer's podcasts as well! Sweet.

Very Odd UI

06/28, 05:56am reply

I can tell Apple is still cutting over content, but that's not my concern.

The UI doesn't make a lot of sense. How do you unsubcribe? Why are there links at the bottom of the screen?

With the bugs and design flaws in Tiger, now this. Come on Apple, get your act together...

Not Exclusive

Wouldn't an "exclusive" mean that you broke the story? Sorry, but it was on Apple's own Hot News page first.
