Jobs talks podcasts, company's dual-focus

Steve Jobs says that Apple's is focused on growing its Mac business is as well as its iPod/iTunes market, following yesterday's announcements of a new color iPod line, reduced pricing, and iTunes 4.9 with podcasting features. In an interview with ABC.com, Jobs said that while podcasts are free, users should expect advertising 'tagged into them' into the coming months. Meanwhile, Jobs defended the company's dual focus on the iPod and the Mac: "Well, you know, all I can say is that our Macintosh computer sales are growing at— you know, three to four times the rate of the rest of the industry. And— we continue to be the leader in innovation. I think everybody's copying us. So— you know, we're working really hard to make the best personal computers in the world. And we're working very hard to make the best portable digital music players in the world. And I think both are very important to us."

"users should expect advertising 'tagged into them' into the coming months."

I knew there was a catch to all of this! I guess I'm glad I can forward past the ads, but now I wonder if someone could hack my iPod so that the FF button advances 15 and/or 30 seconds ahead? ;)

Oh big deal, so some of the big shots will be taking advantage of podcasting. That's a given. There are plenty of underdog shows out there that kick ass and are free and will remain so, and that's the glory of podcasting. What you subscribe to - mainstream or otherwise - is up to you. No use bitching about it. There's no catch if you look at the bigger picture.

Of course there will be advertising, they are just copying the tried and true method that worded in radio and TV. Only difference is the barrier to entry is a few dollars a month to host a podcast file.

The PBS podcasts will have pledge breaks in them.
