Greedy labels

Jobs on "greedy" labels, iPod nano

Macworld UK reports that Apple CEO Steve Jobs told the press at Apple Expo this morning that greed is the only reason record companies would raise prices for music. Recent reports have suggested some labels have been attempting to force Apple to change the prices it charges on iTunes. “The labels make more money from selling tracks on iTunes than when they sell a CD. There are no marketing costs for them. We are competing with piracy, so it needs to be a fair price: If the price goes up people will go back to piracy,” he warned. Jobs also stated at the expo that the company chose to launch the iPod nano early to prepare for the holiday season. “We launched the iPod nano two weeks ago rather than at the Apple Expo because in the run-up to Christmas every week counts. The launch had been planned for over a year”, he confirmed.

Jobs takes on music world

Jobs vows to fight "greedy" music companies

Apple's CEO Steve Jobs vowed Tuesday to resist music companies' "greedy" demands for price increases on the iTunes music download site and warned that such a move would encourage piracy, according to Reuters. "Jobs, speaking to reporters before the opening of the Apple Expo in Paris, acknowledged that some record companies were pushing him to raise the price of each song download, currently 99 cents on the U.S. iTunes site." Jobs said that record companies already make more profit by selling a song through iTunes than on a CD because of the manufacturing and marketing cost advantages. "So if they want to raise the prices it just means they're getting a little greedy."
