Video iPod supply unable to meet demand?

Some analysts are suggesting that Apple is having a hard time meeting demand for its latest video-capable iPod, based on the fact that it's taking the company between five and seven days to fill online orders, combined with other signs. "They can't seem to build them fast enough," said analyst Shaw Wu of American Technology Research. Supplies of a specific component that Apple's CFO Peter Oppenheimer noted was causing a bottleneck for Nano production -- probably a light-emitting diode backlight used to brighten the display screen -- could have carried over to the video iPod, according to analyst Vinita Jakhanwal of iSuppli. Apple has also been looking for a second supplier for the LCD screens, as adding a second supplier would help meet demand, according to a report from BusinessWeek online. Analyst Shawn Slayton of SG Cowen, who covers PortalPlayer -- a company that supplies Apple with audio chips for the iPod -- expects Apple to sell between seven and eight million video-capable iPods in 2006, according to the report. Meanwhile, at least one analyst notes that iPod nano be more readily available.

I've been waiting since October 13th to get any sort of response from freeipods.com about my order, having taken a year to gather enough referrals to get my free iPod. Apparently this 5-7 day is part of the problem. :p

This is so untrue. I ordered a 60 GB black video iPod for my dad (an early X-Mas for him) on Friday Oct. 21st at 8:00PM. It came on Tuesday Oct. 25th at 9:30AM from China! And, it was engraved!!!!! Free shipping option.

I live in Philadelphia, PA. So, it had to come into Alaska and across the US. That's incredible if you ask me.

The quote is just somebody extrapolating from the ship times posted on the Apple Store. Market Analysts are nothing more that better dressed rumor mongers.

Bash Apple? Are you such a zealot and sycophant that you will do anything to protect Apple?

If Apple did not have a hard time meeting demand, it would have been able to ship one from US. Plus, engraved ones are probably all shipped from China anyway.

Apple has ALWAYS been unable to meet demands for new iPods. So while it is not new news, I must say Apple should have anticipated and increased production and supply.

And who are you to call analyst names? Because of your one single anectodal example you are smarted than four or five analysts that are connected and cover the industry? You are nothing than a monkey who knows how to type.

No one here is saying Apple is without fault. God knows I've had issues wiht some of their products and practices but frankly this is just false. I ordered an iPod this past Monday and already received an email this morning that it had shipped! They are more than meeting demand. Sorry but everything I read from "analysts" usually turn out to be purely speculative crap based on common sense. How do I get THAT job?

So MrKlin either you yourself just love to bash Apple or you're an analyst and it hit too close to home perhaps?

Was that meant to be a joke? If you had done your homework you would have discovered that it could be many months before you get your free iPod from freeipods.com.

I ordered both a 2Gb Black Nano and a 30Gb Black Video on Monday night from the Canadian Apple Store online. Both engraved. I had a shipping notice for both yesterday night...They seem to have things under control....
