iriver clix takes on iPod

iriver today released the iriver clix, a portable media player that will further increase competition for Apple's iPod players. The new player supports Windows Media Player 11 as well as the public beta of MTV Networks' new URGE digital music service, which is expected to launch today. The iriver clix features a new "ultra-intuitive" interface, 2GB of storage, a 2.2-inch color TFT display, and a digital FM tuner. The device also offers enhanced photo viewing and video playback capability, as well as FlashLite game support. A built-in voice recorder and programmable "SmartKey" that allows quick access to common functions round out the feature list of iPod's latest competitor, coupled with USB 2.0 connectivity. The iriver clix ships for $200 with an easy start installation CD, a carrying case with screen cleaner, iriver earphones, a USB 2.0 cable, a printed manual, and a one-year limited warranty.

Yeah, you're going to put a lot of video on that. 2 gigs. Seriously?

So, let's see. You could spend $200 on this thing, or for $100 more you get 30 gigs of storage and a bigger screen with an iPod. Sounds like a good deal to me...

Because of Apple's arrogance, no competitor seems to want to port their audio device to the Mac.

So what if an awesome device does make it into the market that runs circles around the iPod, and they decide not to port it to the Mac?

I guess we'd have to install XP on our Intel Macs.

The reason Apple developed the iPod and iTunes in the first place is because nobody was addressing the mac market with a player compatible with macs. You have it backwards.

IIRC the creative devices do, as to the Archos units and a few others.

My aincient Rio500 even worked with my Mac.

Actually, they could VERY easily port their audio devices to the Mac, or at least provide functionality of their devices on the Mac - but *they* choose not to.

Apple's arrogance? No, you got it wrong. The arrogance is there, but in the WMV/iRiver camp.

Uhm, that's not true. Nobody wanted to address the mac market with a player that was as good as the iPod. Lots of MP3 players worked on Macs (and even with iTunes), but they were simply terribly clunky devices.

Apple saw a market for a well designed music player for Macs or Windows.

Nobody wants to address the Mac community specifically because the Mac community is so dedicated to the iPod. Better to put all the effort towards PC users that could be swayed.
