Apple clarifies: iPod lasts "for years"

Apple today said that company spokeswoman Natalie Kerris was misquoted in a report on iPod lifespan published by the Chicago Tribune earlier this week. The report quoted Kerris as saying that Apple's iPod is designed to last "four years," but Kerris said she told the reporter that the iPod was designed to last "for years." The original report asked whether portable media players are built well enough to withstand everyday wear and tear, citing Apple's acknowledgement of various issues in the recent past. While some problems with iPods remain, the report notes that it is virtually impossible to determine how widespread they actually are due to Apple's retention of statistical information on the issues.

Just not out loud. That's why almost nobody realizes it.

Speak their language

Maybe, to avoid future confusion, Apple should start talking in a language most reporters can understand, like, "Them iPod thingmajigs will done last fer yars..."

Since Apple only supports iPods with firmware upgrades for one year, if they are bug free or not at the end of that year I guess we will soon hear her say:

“I was misquoted, I meant to say iPods last for ears”

I bought my iPod used (store model) for fairly cheap, and it's going on 4 years now. I didn't use a case or anythying, and it's still in fine condition. I guess people don't understand that they have to be somewhat careful on something so small and costly.

Twisted reporters

Just goes to show you how these reporters like to twist things, and sensationalize them into a totally different story. My family has two original 5 gig iPods that are running perfectly and are not damaged in any way. If you are going to treat your iPod like it was in a demolition derby than of course those with common sense will know it won't last very long.

My second gen iPod can't hold all of my music, so i use it as a lifeboat hard drive. I got it in january of 2002. It has more than passed the 4 year mark, and i hope to be able, after a battery replacement im sure, retire it from lifeboat use with a full library of nothing but my favorite music. Oh, i forgot to add, you need a 6 pin firewire port and cable to use it, so i'm sure as the connectivity techniques change, older models like mine will in fact need an older computer, or pc card or such to work with itunes.
