Elecom today announced the new ASP-P100 ultra-portable iPod speaker dock. The design is only slightly taller than a standard Universal Dock, but accommodates a 2-watt speaker system that can play music directly from an iPod while the system is either plugged into an AC power outlet or running independently using four AAA batteries. The dock is capable of charging the player when plugged into an AC or USB power source, and synchronizes with a Mac or Windows PC when attached through the included USB cable. The P100 ($60) will soon ship in Japan in black or white trim, offering support for all dockable iPods.
iSymphony today positioned its new multi-role DVD Music Micro System for iPod as a complete alternative to most basic home theaters. The 50-watt stereo supports music playback from all iPods through a top-mounted Universal Dock as well as auxiliary input for the iPod shuffle and generic music players, according to Electronista. The M2 also includes a progressive-scan DVD player that displays both conventional movies as well as DivX, MPEG-4, and VCD movie files. The DVD drive further serves as an MP3- and WMA-capable CD player. Unifying these three functions is the clock radio, which iSymphony says can wake users to the music of an attached iPod, a CD, or a preset AM/FM radio station. Users can also play music stored on SD or Memory Stick cards as well as any removable USB storage hardware. The M2 ships from Sam's Club and other retailers for $200.
Griffin Technology today previewed its first iPod speaker systems, designed alternately for desktop and portable listening. The AmpliFi (pictured, $150) is a tabletop iPod speaker dock with a wooden enclosure to improve sound quality. Unlike most such systems, the AmpliFi will incorporate a 5-inch subwoofer to add bass response in addition to the mid-range and treble of the 2.75-inch satellites, according to iLounge. The system will include an infrared remote in addition to a built-in minijack input for the iPod shuffle and other audio sources. Also announced is the Voyager ($130), a portable speaker system that features a hard rubberized shell that both keeps the speakers upright when in use and folds on top to create a protective shell when not in use. Power when traveling is supplied through a lithium-ion battery instead of disposable batteries. The Voyager will also have support for audio-out and USB connections to attach to computers or external speakers, Griffin says. Both the AmpliFi and Voyager are planned for a first quarter 2007 launch.
