Apple adds Excel, Word support to iPhone

Apple today revealed that its iPhone will support Microsoft Excel and Word documents, putting to rest one of the major criticisms voiced by potential business adopters of the mobile handset. The company's guided tour of iPhone reveals clearly that the device does in fact support viewing Microsoft Word and Excel documents received in email messages, prompting potential business customers to rethink any decisions to hold off on purchasing the device as a result of lacking functionality in the corporate realm. Rumors are also circulating that Apple is planning to integrate the iPhone with current corporate email installations, which would make the cellular phone an even more tantalizing option for widespread enterprise adoption.

The video doesn't mention excel support. Where is everyone hearing about excel support? The email attachments are clearly a pdf chart and word document.

DAMN. Someone put a whole lot of time into the design of this thing. This is the Gordian Knot approach, as opposed to the apparent standard of "lets duct tape and staple even more features into some existing handset that clearly cannot stand another 1K of stuff, and do it within the creaking UI that they decided we're stuck with." I was on the fence about this being revolutionary, but the demo video paints it in an amazing light. And look - they found version 2.0 of the nice haircut and crew-neck guy from the old "Macintosh Basics" in System 7!

Yup. The host mentions both word and excel files. Unfortuantely, they leave out powerpoint files. Why would they do that? Preview can handle it, as can Keynote. It shouldn't be that hard...

I hope it does a better job with Word files then TextEdit does. It so often decides to dump out pictures and formatting.

Sweet, glorious specs of the 11.6 millimeter device (that's frickin' thin, by the way) include a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 touchscreen display with multi-touch support and a proximity sensor to turn off the screen when it's close to your face

Correct me if I am wrong but I am thinking that iPhone's "multi-touch" does mean "another pointer".
