TV shows at iTunes Canada

As rumored would happen, the Canadian iTunes Store has today added TV shows (iTunes link), marking the first paid video content on the site beyond music clips or Pixar's short films. Content remains fairly limited, concentrated around four shows each from CBC and CTV: CBC videos include episodes of programs like Little Mosque on the Prairie and the Rick Mercer Report, while CTV is carrying programs such as Corner Gas and Degrassi: The Next Generation. Shoppers can also choose from a handful of MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon shows, as well as select Stanley Cup finals games provided by the NHL.

The NHL games are over two hours long, but cost $1.99 CAD each; this is the same price as individual episodes of 22-minute programs. The price of a full season is currently dependent on the number of episodes, but is a minimum of $11.94 for Season 2 of The Sarah Silverman Program.

The arrival of TV shows at iTunes Canada may not be coincidental, as Microsoft recently opened the Xbox Video Marketplace to the country, albeit only to sell movies. Apple has also long promised to open up video sales to Canada during 2007, and the limited amount of material now present may represent a last-minute attempt to fulfill the company's pledge.

Not to mention the fact that for the Mercer report, anyway, streamable from the CBC site. Certainly a load of c*** here right at the moment.....

In response to Little mosque... You won't find that show in "America" because American network executives, for the most part, assume their TV audiences to be near-toothless illiterate trailer-trash types who gobble up American Idol and the likes as culture and, quite frankly, they're more than happy to keep them as brain-numbed as possible. It makes their jobs easy, and keeps their skittish advertisers happy. An American network would never have the nerve (I'd prefer to use a more expressive word here...) to run a show like "Little Mosque on the Prairie". That being said, LMOtP is by no means amazing, the writing is at times formulaic and not nearly as funny as its creators think it is. While the premise is inspired, the execution is marred, diluted, and never reaches its lofty potential. Like many anemic Canadian comedies it comes off as a little too insecure to be truly edgy and groundbreaking, and never does more than flirt with the chance to be brilliant, and hence is quintessentially Canadian. Like any good Canadian, it is content to stand politely in the crowd and not draw too much attention to itself but secretly dreams to be universally adored.

I'd love to see the Canadian iTunes TV catalogue be far more extensive than it currently... where's Torchwood (another show the U.S. could wouldn't have the nerve to create), and Dr. Who (not Canadian, but these are Canada/UK co-productions). I have no problems keeping the U.S. TV dross off the Canadian iTunes store. It's quite enough to be able to pick and choose the cream of the crop of American programming and watch it live, and that's not a lot of shows. Canadians can produce TV content that ranks with the best in the world, as long as they don't waste their energy trying too hard to be "Canadian" and aren't afraid NOT to be liked by every viewer in TV-land... Great TV is not universally adored, nor should it be. I'm glad the Canadian itunes store is finally going somewhere, but disappointed it is off to such a "Canadian" start.

...is not meant to be as "groundbreaking" as people think. It's not meant to upset people or stir up controversy. Little Mosque and Corner Gas are both examples of good comedies. Far better than the sitcom garbage coming from the US these days. There are a few decent sitcoms, but they're becoming increasingly difficult to find.

(Note to US producers, get rid of the annoying laugh tracks, if you make your shows funny, then I will laugh)

Since when is "groundbreaking" synonymous with stirring up controversy or upsetting people? Those terms are not necessarily inclusive. Little Mosque rides upon an amazing premise but fails to deliver on many fronts. Corner Gas is, at best, an acquired taste, and it's simply too M.O.R. and lacking in ambition to be considered great. It seems only natural that any "smash hit" should be great, and not simply good, which is all Corner Gas manages to be when it does try to shine..

Of all the shows offered, I've not ever watched a single one.

Sad. Very sad.
