Nokia extends Ovi invitation to Apple

Nokia has offered Apple a chance to join its Ovi Web portal, which would integrate the iTunes Store with the company's own collection of services -- including the Nokia music store, photo sharing, and access to services like Flickr. "In Finnish, Ovi means door. And our door is open. Of course, Apple can get into our portal. We even invite (Apple Inc chief executive) Steve Jobs to do so," said board member Anssi Vanjoki. Vanjoki also said that Apple's iTunes Store would be an enrichment for Nokia's customers, according to Thomson Financial.

Nokia announced its forthcoming Ovi internet services in late August at the Go Play event in London, and unveiled a plan earlier this month to release a public beta desktop version of the software as soon as internal tests are completed -- likely some time in early 2008.

The Ovi service includes the Nokia Music Store, Nokia Maps, and the company's N-Gage Arena gaming platform.

nokia really seem to want to work with apple a bit. with them complimenting apple and invites. i think apple could do a lot worse then partner with nokia. could open up some new doors for the n-gage and might see some sort of n-gage gaming on future iphones or ipods ect.

I hope Apple goes along with this... but knowing Apple they are probably too arrogant.

Well I suppose working with Nokia would make sense if it hurts Microsoft. Outside of the US Nokia is the king of cellphones (and network technology). And the US is not an important market in the global sense. Europe, Japan, Korea and China are all far more interesting to cellphone companies. But I don't see why Apple would dare expose their iPhone marketshare by aligning themselves with Nokia. After all the future is in that market and not just PCs.

It's not arrogance. Nokia is the arrogant ones here. Oh, apple can get in OUR door and be part of our service.

It's like the ugly dork saying to the hot chick that you can get in my door. Yeah right, sure that will work.

Whoever at Nokia think this will work is an idiot.

Apple can't get involved with another phone maker, that makes it to complex. Every phone can play the DRM free music from iTunes and that is the best option for Apple.

Games and software won't be a problem, Apple doesn't need Nokia for that.

This is just another backup plan for Nokia. It's a desperate call for safety net. It's "If you can't beat the enemy, join them" type of thing. Nokia is about to loose its ground in the future if it doesn't do something. What is it that Nokia can do that Apple can't do? Remember Motorola ROCKR? Ha ha ha. Apple treated Motorola like a second class plus slapped its face with a new iPhone later.

allow nokia phones play itunes music and iphone/ipod play nokia games/music videos that would work out great for both companies i think. plus even more choice for the customers. its not like people are going to stop buying ipods and buy an nokia phone instead they wont. but it would help both companies gain more ground on everyone else

There is no win for Apple in this, it will only help Nokia survive the next few years. Content is vital and iTunes has the best cards at the moment, Apple has to use this for there own products and not help other company's.

Nokia or even Nintendo games won't even work on the iPod or iPhone because the controls are completely different, more expensive than $5 and Apple won't get a cut in the profit.

Just give Apple a few more years and we'll have the best portable platform ever, don't be distracted by something shiny.
