Best Buy to double Mac availability in stores

Best Buy is planning to almost double the number of stores that sell Apple-branded goods, according to conversations held with company executives at the Computer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada. UBS analysts say the brick-and-mortar retailer aims to expand its Mac sales to 500 stores in 2008, up from the current 270 outlets, according to AppleInsider.

A report surfaced in early August of 2007 that both Apple and Best Buy are planning to sell iPhones at some of the retailer's nationwide outlets within 4-6 weeks, indicating the continued success of Apple products in Best Buy stores.

The retail giant announced plans to expand its offering of Macs to 200 stores across the U.S. in early April of 2007, backing claims by industry experts that demand for Macs was indeed expanding at a rapid pace.

"Our checks suggest that Mac sales held up well in fiscal 2Q and could be poised for acceleration into the launch of Leopard this Spring (also Adobe's launch of its Creative Suite 3 should help)," UBS analyst Ben Reitzes wrote in a research note obtained by MacNN. "We note that Apple also launched a new Mac Pro today that features eight processor cores via two Intel Xeon quad-core 'Clovertown' microprocessors."

The analyst also correctly predicted that additional new Mac products would expand relationships with Best Buy.

if they actually sold a variety of software for the Mac. All they have is Office and Apple apps at my "local" BB.

The title implies twice the availability of stock in stores, not twice the stores with stock.

And not much research in that note. "We note that Apple also launched a new Mac Pro today that features eight processor cores via two Intel Xeon quad-core 'Clovertown' microprocessors."

Wow! Yet I can't imagine Best Buy trying to hawk $2800 MacPros at their stores. They'd be sticking to consumer models.

Nope Testudo - my first reaction and also the 2 people that pointed the article out to me was the availability in more stores - not an increase of content in the existing stores with content already_

And about BB "hawking $2800 MacPros..." Why not they sell higher end model PCs regularly_ They also do Made to Order PCs_ And besides this wouldn't be any different than offerings at stores like CompUSA [who is going defunct shortly anyway]_

So this is kind of good news for those of us that don't actually live in a city where there is an available Apple Store_ The next city near here witha Best Buy in it is selling Mac stuff - bu the one here in town is not_ So maybe my local store will be in this next batch_

Not that I'm in the habit of agreeing with testudo, but, as a writer, I should mention that he's right about the headline. "Double Mac availability in stores" implies twice as many Macs in the store.
