Garmin GPS software adds transfer support

Garmin International today announced that it has expanded its suite of Mac-compatible applications to include waypoint, track, and route management. The new trip planning software works with both PowerPC and Intel-based Macs, and works in conjunction with all Garmin USB devices. The software allows Mac users to transfer waypoints, tracks, and routes between a Mac and Garmin device while managing data using Garmin's catalog of map products. Favorite points of interest are available for quick reference on the Garmin GPS, and users can save as well as view favorite waypoints or tracks with a few keystrokes.

The software is available for free via digital download, and the company is handing out copies of its application to all Macworld Expo attendees. The pre-release version precedes a future version promised by Garmin, which will include features like route editing and 'find by address' functionality by the end of 2008.

That's excellent news. I've been on the fence for ages as to whether or not I should buy a Garmin GPS. This remove any remaining dubiety. A good day for me - I can justify buying another gadget :)

I stopped by Garmin's booth at MacWorld and checked it out. It's pretty awesome. You can download it and try it too. The Garmin rep said they are still working on making it fully on par with MapSource, for example, waypoints don't work right now. But it's a great start. It has a Mac feel to it which is great.

btw - the new gps they showed off was pretty cool too. Of course, I just got my eTrex Vista hcx . . .

and it looks to be better than the pc version when they are done with it. The Garmin rep said they hope they get a lot of good feedback so go download it and stop complaining :)

kidding. I was waiting for it too. I was trying it out last night. A little ways to go but I think they are now dedicated to the Mac. Also, mapsource cd's and dvd's are now Mac native. So we don't have to go through the conversion anymore. Good stuff.
