Apple: iTunes 7.6, QuickTime 7.4, iMovie 7.1.1, more

Apple today released updates to iTunes 7.6, QuickTime 7.4, iMovie 7.1.1, and Front Row 2.1.2. The iTunes update rent and download movies (or directly to your living room on Apple TV) -- in sizes up to 720p HD with surround sound on your Apple TV and sizes up to DVD-quality on your computer. Users can also transfer rented movies from iTunes to your iPod or iPhone and enjoy them on the go. The update also adds the ability to easily transfer purchases made on Apple TV back to your computer with iTunes. QuickTime 7.4 brings numerous bug fixes and support for the latest iTunes. iMove 7.1.1 addresses issues when publishing movies to a .Mac Web Gallery, improves overall stability, and addresses a number of other minor issues, according the company's documentation. Finally, Front Row 2.1.2 update addresses issues when publishing movies to a .Mac Web Gallery, improves overall stability, and addresses a number of other minor issues. All are available via the Software Update

Security Update?
0

This morning my Pismo reported a new Security Update that fixed a whole bunch of problems apparently: downloaded, restarted and... little spinning wheel... wait an hour, little spinning wheel.

On my G4, there's no sign of the update: maybe pulled for being buggy, or a ploy to get more MacBook Air sales? Anyone else have this problem?

why only DVD quality on the computer?

Because apple wants you to buy an Apple TV. Or maybe it's some lame argument about how offering it on the computer would require them to record an accounting change and thus charge you. Or, since not all macs can display HD quality picture, they decided not to allow anyone to do it, since then someone would complain about how they can't do HD.

But my guess is the first one. They really just want you to use the AppleTV for everything related to your TV (except watching DVDs or cable/satellite broadcasts).

OK, I'm only seeing some rent buttons on some movies such as Ratatouille but not Cars. Is the whole studio catalog not avaliable or did m yItunes update not work?

No, I think it was due to a backdoor agreement with the studios – since Jobs pitched the AppleTV to them as a closed device, they were more willing to do HD downloads, but a computer opens the chance for the average Joe to give it to his friend (should such a utility arrive eventually).
