Spore to ship for Mac in 2008

Electronic Arts today is expected to announce the forthcoming release of Spore for both Mac and PC, which is slated for shipment later this year. The company also promises to show Spore running on Macs at Macworld Expo in San Francisco, according to News.com. EA Games announced for the first time last year that it would release some of its biggest game titles to the Mac, and is partnering with TransGaming Technologies to ensure it can keep that promise in 2008.

Spore is a game from the mind of Will Write, the creator of The Sims. The game challenges players to journey through five phases of play, each presenting its own set of challenges and rewards.

Spore players start with the Tide Pool Phase, where fighting with other creatures and consuming them to adjust the form and abilities of a creature is the goal.

"It's survival of the fittest at the most microscopic level."

Next players venture onto land in the Creature Phase to help their creation learn and evolve as they venture away from the nest. Taking chances enables players to grow and adapt.

Moving on to the Tribal Phase, players gain control of an entire tribe while providing tools as well as guidance with their interactions. This phase allows players to upgrade their state of existence.

The Civilization Phase comes when creatures begin seeking out and interacting with other cultures. Players can make contact in a peaceful manner or by attacking newly-discovered inhabitants. The goal is to conquer the entire planet.

The fifth and final phase, known as the Space Phase, enables players to move on to other worlds -- first in their own solar system and later to other systems. Making contact, colonizing, or terraforming other worlds construe the primary goals of this phase, while a 'mission' structure provides new goals in the quest for galactic dominance.

It's Will Wright...

Not Will Write. I'm wondering how much horsepower is needed to run this. On the one hand, it's an ambitious title running under an emulation layer. On the other hand, it's also targeted for the Wii, which doesn't exactly burn down the barn with power.

(as i posted elsewhere today)

These "ports" really suck. The two games I have so far from this "new breed" of EA releases are just... horrible. Crashes all the time, huge CPU overhead, and I'm running a Quad 2.66 Mac Pro. Not to mention the support for the Mac side of things seems virtually non-existent. I most definitely won't be spending any more money on EA titles until they start writing native code and truly start supporting the Mac platform. I will not, however, be holding my breath.

Though there is much more info about the game and gameplay online and in the video demos, it looked and played well here at MacWorld. It wasn't a full demo but it was fun to create your creature and his different personalities. I have been looking forward to this game for a long time and I think it's going to be great.
