Apple Q1: iPod sales flat year-over-year

Apple's iPod sales were relatively flat year-over-year, showing 5 percent unit shipment growth but significant 17 percent revenue growth in the fiscal first quarter. 22,121,000 iPods representing $3,997,000,000 were sold in the quarter, compared to 21,066,000 units representing $3,427,000,000 in the year-ago-quarter. The higher revenue is likely due to a richer product mix caused by the sale of more iPod nanos and iPod Touch units and less iPod Shuffles. Other music related services generated $808 million in revenue vs. $601 million in the year-ago quarter. Meanwhile, 2,315,000 iPhones were sold in the quarter, representing $241 million in revenue -- a 107 percent sequential increase in units compared to the the fiscal fourth quarter of 2007.

Software, Service and Other Sales represented $628 million in the quarter, up a whopping 81 percent from the year-ago period, thanks in large part to stunning Leopard sales. Peripherals and other hardware sales represented $382 million, a 29% increase from the year-ago quarter.

Or perhaps that the iPhone was eating into iPod sales as far as gift giving goes.

There are gonna be 8 billion people on this planet pretty soon, and I don't think they all have an iPod yet. Plenty of iPod sales still to be made out there...

and of course, if all 8 billion people had iPods, then they would be so happy, that it would mean the end to war...

I mean 5% is not bad-it beats COL, is generally more than a lot of peoples raises, and show that that there is still growth. Growth may have slowed some, but I agree that iPhone sales probably dipped into this some.

You can do and say anything with statistics, just listen to reporters...

Perhaps the market is finally getting full of iPods? You can't have exposnential growth forever!

This means that the Mac has to continue growing for Apple to keep growing. The iPod is a steady source or revenue, but not necessarily growth.

Chicken Little was right, the world is ending. Apple sold 22 Million iPods this Xmas. That means that 22 million and assuming only 25% were a second purchase, that means 15 MILLION new customers decided to buy Apple.

I do not see Microsoft selling 22 million Zunes, Creative selling 22 million Rios. ONLY Apple. OH and people are buying even more expensive iPods (Touch, new Nano, etc). So, Apple makes more money than ever and that means its crashing down.

I am sorry to report to all the Microsoft fans out there that actually the opposite is true. Apple is quicking approaching the Home electronic entertainment solution faster and better than anyone else. PS. and it actually works for the average user too. :-)

Anyway. Have a nice day either way. :-)
