SDK groundwork laid in iPhone, Touch 1.1.3?

The recently-unveiled 1.1.3 update for the iPhone and iPod touch potentially lays the groundwork for officially installable third-party applications. According to Creations.net, SpringBoard no longer needs to be modified to show other applications in the unit's /Applications folder, and they no longer run under the root user, instead identifying themselves under the user "mobile". Preferences have also changed locations, now occupying the /var/mobile directory in place of /var/root.

While the update reportedly modifies software framework in order to make it easier for users to deploy applications made from the upcoming official developer's kit, it also breaks some jailbroken apps – software installed on the device through a back door exploit.

SpringBoard also appears to support widgets, which is evident through the included class called SBWidgetApplication

Last October, Steve Jobs announced that an official software developer kit is coming for the iPhone and iPod touch, which would allow developers to create officially-supported applications. Users currently have to circumvent the devices' security measures in order to install applications, which can leave their unit vulnerable to attack.

I just saw a buddies iPhone that had been hacked- he had a SEARCH function - that did contacts, calender and I think SMS messages. Made me want to crack mine- right then and there. Also had a cool camera function that zoomed- games, and a bar code reader/data transfer thing that was really cool. Apple is killing me with lack of search- in a meeting today- I had to whip out the laptop so I could search by company.... what is Steve Jobs thinking? SMARTPHONES SEARCH.

That happened to me last night while I knew for certain the contact was on my phone and I could not find him because I have changed the Display and Sort Order. I ended using my Hard Copy Business Card Catalog. Later on I had to dig to find it in the iPhone. Imagine that! I have used "jailbreak" and the Search using Installer made it all worthwhile to hack the iPhone. I am in between iPhone replacement due to repairs (Lost iPod Audio & Microphone) so I have control myself from using Jailbreak. Because, I may have to return this iPhone. But I truly truly feel your pain. I miss being able use basic functions like WeDict, ToDo List, Wall Paper, Leopard Dock, playing BlackJack and of course Search! So, YES! I feel your pain!
