AT&T: 2m iPhone customers

AT&T today said it ended 2007 with "just at or slightly under two million iPhone customers," according to a report from Reuters. The wireless carrier, which has an exclusive agreement with Apple to distribute as well as provide service for the iPhone in the U.S., reported "strong" fourth quarter results and reaffirmed its 2008 and multi-year outlook. AT&T saw 2.7 million new wireless subscribers, marking the best-ever quarterly increase by any U.S. wireless company to end the year with a total of 70.1 million wireless subscribers.

"We had very solid sales results in October and November and we had almost double sales in December," AT&T CFO Rick Lindner said of iPhone sales.

Interestingly, Apple reported quarterly iPhone sales of more than 2.3 million over the same period, helping the Cupertino-based company to churn out its best quarter in history.

    Not to be too excited

For those who think there is a huge number of devices going abroad to be unlocked, the discrepancy between Apple's and AT&T's numbers is more likely due to the delay in getting all those iPhones that Apple sold in December (i.e. before Christmas) activated on AT&T's network. Many of them didn't get around to it until the next year, pusing those into the next quarter.

    Doesn't Make Sense

With due respect to vasic, I doubt that 2 million purchasers of iPhones did not activate their phonesbefore the end of the calendar year. I suspect the meaning of "customer" is different than the "sold" count by Apple (the latter, perhaps, including units bought by AT&T for resale). Even so, 50% is a very big difference
