O2 attaches 'Bolt Ons' to iPhone plans

Following the recent announcement of upgraded iPhone plans, UK carrier O2 has revealed a series of Bolt On packages meant to address limitations of the default voice and SMS packages. Each of the main Bolt Ons costs £7.50, and offers a choice of unlimited O2-to-O2 calls, weekend calls, or fixed-line calls; alternately, subscribers can graft on 200 minutes, or gain unlimited texting. Use of the term "unlimited" may be controversial however, as like many of the company's services, sanctions are in place against "excessive" usage.

More critical to some may be the roaming Bolt Ons, which could save on some of the notoriously high roaming costs in Europe. By paying £10 per month, subscribers can receive calls across Europe for free, or make calls for 25p per minute for the first 1,000 minutes. Spain is considered separate under this scheme, and costs £5 a month.

Finally, people can choose a single "Discount Country" for £3, granting flat rates for calls to fixed and cellular lines. These range from 9p per minute for Canada and the US, to 43p for China.

As a UK mobile phone user who has gone through 6 phones the latest two years old which cost me £220 the iphone cost is not in any way a problem for me, I love the iphone and would buy two for me and my partner in an instant where it not for the contract ( rip off price ), all my phones have always been pay as you go ( No contract ) why should I start paying for a service I haven't used yet in advance, Oh I must go and buy a train ticket now just in case I ever decide to use one, I don't even mind being tied to one company i.e. O2 which is who my present phone is connected to but all the add on's in the world are no use to people who use there phones only a little, try again O2/Apple as a 12 year mac user from OS 8.5 till now Im not buying it even though I'd love to. Give us a pay as you go or a greatly reduced minimum contract and so have to wait a year or two longer to receive the revenue and I can tell you of half a dozen people I know in the UK who would by an iphone.

... I'd like a simpler contract, and we'll get one eventually, but I don't see how the unlimited data is going to work on PAYG.And without that the iPhone is crippled. So something like a tenner a month for data and payg calls and texts would tempt me.

Data roaming? Absent. £7.05 per Mb - note small b. £56.40 per MB. Cuts down on the functionality - better hope there is a wi-fi network nearby if you travel abroad. Great deal in the UK, but scary once you leave home...
