Apple launches 16GB iPhone, 32GB iPod touch

16GB iPhone and 32GB touch

Apple today doubled the capacity of its touchscreen media devices, releasing both a 16GB iPhone as well as a 32GB variant of the iPod touch. The new capacities allow fewer sacrifices for owners who want to carry as much media as possible. "For some users, there's never enough memory," Apple Worldwide iPod and iPhone Product Marketing VP Greg Joswiak says. On the iPod touch, the new storage level allows as many as 7,000 songs or 40 hours of nonstop video; the iPhone now holds half as much in exchange for its cellular functions, which remain unchanged from the original 8GB model.

Both capacities act as supersets of the existing capacities, which remain available; both the 16GB iPhone and the 32GB iPod touch sell for $499 and are ready to order immediately from the online Apple Store.

Ipod Screen

But the screen's the same lesser-quality-than-the-iphone one they had before, right?

still no firewire

Pointless upgrade unless you have a stupidly small collection. What is needed is firewire instead of USB to make juggling content less stressful.

What's hidden?

I wonder if the memory upgrades are the only modifications from the original model? Could new iPhone and iPod Touch use upgraded chipset as well? Better screen for iPod Touch?

Like Switching

I have an iphone, and I don't mind swapping music. My total collection is about 130 GB, so until recently, it never fit on an iPod anyway.

I also use one of Doug's scripts to create a random play list. 1100 songs and a movie is fine. Switching songs upon synch is fine.

I am curious if I can swap my iPhone without any "penalty," from AT&T. I am sure they will want something for the privilege of using their network.

Forget FW. Apple is never going to make another iPod with it. Most Windows users have USB2 and it makes sense for them to have that as the standard.

Look at the MacBook Air, no FW on that either. If you have a Mac that was originally shipped with Mac OS 10.4 (or later), then it will have USB2 on it.

FireWire

"Still" no FireWire? Apple removed FireWire from iPods ages ago, in no small part because it alienated PC users. You might not have an iPod to complain about if Apple hadn't compromised for the mainstream market.

My iPhone is my business mobile device. 600 heavy contacts, 350 songs that I'm happy to swap out from time to time, 8 various daily/weekly podcasts, 15-20 video podcasts at any given time, and only about 1/4 full.

And it's electric, not coal- or diesel-powered like the MS Green TurdBrick.

Just been in the Apple Store in Regent Street London and purchased - they weren't even out on the shelves, but I was asking about the Iphone in general, and the lass very conspiratorially told me she had a box of them right there.

The rest of the world is waiting for 3G, not higher storage capacity.

We can be without GPS but EDGE is stone age for many civilized countries.

I can only imagine that the Apple engineers can't make the 3G phones run as long as one would like.
