SuperDuper! 2.5 intros side-by-side backup

Shirt Pocket has released the v2.5 update for SuperDuper!, its Mac backup utility. In addition to performing functions such as scheduling and restoration, the program is notable for also creating bootable backups, and cloned ones that let users resume work as soon as the information is copied to a new hard drive. The new version at last brings full Leopard support. including the ability to create bootable SuperDuper! backups on the same volume as one for Time Machine.

Other enhancements include a better implementation of Spotlight, a "Run Now" option for scheduled backups, and a variety of performance tweaks. SuperDuper! is a Universal Binary for Mac OS X 10.4 or later, and costs $28; the v2.5 patch is a free download.

Super Duper is completely Leopard compatible, the old version was not as should not have been used with Leopard. This was clearly stated in Shirt pocket's excellent blog on the update process. It seems like the work necessary to make Super Duper Leopard compatible was considerable, but David kept users informed with his blog, he was adamant that they would not release a version without being sure that it was as bug free as they could make it. It is backup software after all. Apple made serious changes to the OS to accommodate Time machine and this meant that there were some tricky cases that needed to be addressed. Super Duper is an important app that complements Time Machine by allowing a bootable clone of your working OS volume, something that can't be done in Time Machine. If your drive dies you are a re-boot away from continuing working. I have not felt safe working in Leopard without Super Duper, now I can rest at night. Simon L.
