First Look: Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor

Anyone who uses a computer should learn to type, but not everyone has the time to learn. To teach typing, Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor offers a self-paced program that guides users from learning proper finger placement to measuring typing speed and accuracy. While designed for beginners, the program can also help intermediate typists improve their skills as well. Multiple users can create their own accounts and the program tracks the progress of each person. Ten Thumbs Typing tutor can even adapt to different keyboard layouts (such as the Dvorak layout), as well as foreign language keyboards.

Like most typing tutorials, Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor provides plenty of typing practice. First, the program displays new keys to learn and shows which fingers you need to press them. Then it gives you a variety of exercises to help you practice and measure your progress. At any time, you can return to a previous lesson until you feel comfortable typing with particular keys.

To make such drill and practice sessions more enjoyable, Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor can play your favorite songs, stored in iTunes, as you practice typing. For additional entertainment, the program also provides two simple video games that force you to type ever increasing letter combinations to catch falling bricks or navigate a Viking ship safely past crocodiles on a river.

By visiting the Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor web site, you can take a free typing test. If you need to learn typing but don’t have time to take a class, then Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor can help you learn at your convenience. With its colorful graphics, ability to play music as you learn, and handle multiple users, Ten Thumbs Typing tutor can turn anyone from a novice to an advanced typist in no time. The price for the program is $25.95 if you purchase the downloadable version or $34.95 if you prefer receiving the program on a CD through the mail.

This typing tutor has been around for about 10 years and hasn't changed all that much since then. Have a look at Master Key at macinmind.com as well.
