Apple releases Aperture 2 free trial

Apple has released a free trial of Aperture 2, the latest release of its professional post production photography software for Mac OS X. The trial is a fully functional version of Aperture that photographers can use and experiment with, according to Apple, including all the features available in a licensed copy. The trial expires 30 days after it is first launched. The Cupertino-based company released Aperture 2.0 earlier this week, adding a new sleeker interface that allows users to flip between Browser and Viewer modes with a single keystroke.

Users interested in receiving the free trial first need to read and agree to Apple's participation terms and fill out a form, after which the company will email a serial number to activate the software for the full length of the trial. The trial does not include sample images, but users can acquire both when placing an order by selecting the 'retail box' option.

The Aperture 2.0 free trial requires an Intel-based Mac or a qualified PowerPC system to run, and Apple is encouraging users to download/run the Compatibility Checker to verify that a particular system supports Aperture 2.

Apple also notes that free trial versions of the application cannot be updated, as this is restricted to purchased versions of Aperture only.

its not like this is new for today...

the trail version of 2.0 was available for download on tuesday when the application was introduced. actually, its all the same version. if you install it from DVD and don't put the activation serial number into it, you can request a trial serial number right from the aperture web site.

forced upgrades

Gotta love how Apple is forcing upgrades on users by not allowing the new RAW support in 10.5.2 to work in Aperture 1.0. Somehow magically it will work in iPhoto, but the higher end software doesn't get it.

And I thought the whole wonderfulness of integrating this stuff into Core Image and the OS was that it then works with all software.

So, in order to get the new RAW file support, you have to upgrade to Leopard AND to Aperture 2.0. Gotta love it!

Not quite true. You DO need version 2 of Aperture to get the new RAW 2.0 support but you do NOT need to be running Leopard. Also, Adobe also does not include newer RAW support in CS2, you have to upgrade to CS3. So, nice try testudo...

even if apple had released a version 1.5.7 of Aperture that suppored my D300 right alongside the release of Aperture 2.0, i still would have ugraded to 2.0. its got features i want and need. i will recoup my $99 upgrade investment within a few short weeks.

Despite the long-lived support for my DSLR in Aperture, there are at least of dozen new features that made my jump at buying the newer version.

FYI: If you've got an older machine like mine (1.67 Ghz PB) I've seen a very nice speed increase and feel like editting 100s of photos is no longer a marathon trial.
