Britannica on iPhone

Brittannica engineers have released an application for Apple's iPhone and iPod touch that brings thousands of articles covering all subjects at i.eb.com to the portable devices. The application boasts a look and feel tailored to the iPhone with full-text searching, thousands of high-resolution thumbnails that expand to full-size images, and page layouts optimized for cellphone bandwidth. "It's fully searchable and hot-linked, similar to Britannica's Web editions," Britannica said.

Britannica's iPhone application joins a host of others the company has developed in recent years for cell phones and wireless and handheld devices.

"People today want information wherever they go," said Dan Smith, a senior vice president at Encyclopedia Britannica. "They want to satisfy their curiosity the moment it's aroused, whether they're on a train, in a restaurant talking to friends, or watching a sunset on the beach. Now we can get answers to them in ways that weren't possible before."

Who needs a app for this? With Google and Wikipedia there is no point. The "Britannica" is sinking .. they should have thought about it a long time ago ...

Tried it out and it looks pretty good, but I'd rather have Wikipedia in an easier to read format (with pictures) on my iPhone. That would rock!

Because Britannica has reliability and authority. Google and Wikis require more evaluation of the source.

true, however...

If you're willing to think critically about the information found on the Web, it can be a far larger, richer, more detailed resource than Britannica, which I find very limited. I'm not talking about photos or anything like that. You can just find information on the Web that you'll never find in Britannica.

Currently, the iPhone is just too expensive; therefore, I'll stick with my ipod until the price of the iPhone declines.
