Apple, Nike to offer Nike+iPod for exercise equipment

Nike and Apple are refreshing their Nike+iPod offerings this summer, by working with Life Fitness, Precor, Star Trac, and Technogym, with the goal of making exercise equipment compatible with the workout tracking system. Users will be able to attach their iPod nano directly to a number of different treadmills, elliptical trainers, stationary bikes, and stair climbers, and utilize the same statistic and objective tracking that is offered by the stand-alone kit.

"The Nike + iPod experience revolutionized running. Now we’re revolutionizing the gym cardio experience," said Trevor Edwards, Vice President of Global Brand and Category Management for Nike. "We’re enabling people who go to the gym an opportunity to set goals, track progress, and compete in challenges with their friends and with other members of http://www.nikeplus.com. It’s a groundbreaking tool for people who want to maximize their workouts."

The data is based off what the exercise machine reports, rather than relying on the Nike+ wireless dongle, which is then synced to the Nikeplus.com website.

Why only nano?

Why does Apple continue to insist that Nike+ only work with the iPod Nano. I think they had a decent excuse when the nano was the only flash based iPod, but that hasn't been the case since June. Why do the iPhone and iPod Touch continue to lack this ability?
