Apple ninth in laptop sales, shows strong growth

Apple sits ninth overall in laptop sales, but also has the third highest rate of growth, according to a recent study performed by The NPD Group. According to the study, Apple had moved through 1.34 million laptops during the quarter, earning 4.1-percent market share, which is up 38-percent from the year ago quarter. HP remained the top brand, claiming 20.1-percent market share, by moving 6.66 million laptops, up from 4.69 million last year.

Acer's acquisition of Gateway and Packard Bell allowed it to steal Dell's number two spot, boasting sales of 5.25 million, versus Dell's 4.64 million units. Acer sits at 15.9-percent market share, while Dell accounts for 14-percent.

Toshiba and Lenovo round out the top five with 8.6- and 8.2-percent share respectively.

4.1 percent seems a bit low, other reports say 7%.

But i do understand the PC growth, we have a 100% Mac household but when the PC laptops hit $300 i'll buy a few to use as portable DVD-players for the kids. Don't care if they'll have Linux or Windows but i need the DVD-drive and 2 hrs battery-life.

I have read elsewhere that Apple portables (that's portables) have a greater than 17 percent share of the U.S. portable market. Will the real number please stand up?

17% US laptop marketshare, 7% combined share in the US and 4% worldwide laptop marketshare. This could be somewhat of an explication for the different numbers out there. :/

Unfortunately the economy will have a hand in future numbers. I wonder how this will all pan out a year from now?

Still I'm glad to see the increase, though I thought it was more. I'm seeing a lot more macs these days on what is known as a "windows only" campus. I love it when XP users ask-after presentations-how the transition effects etc. where done. I know many have gone on to get a Mac too. Wish I could get a cut.

I am not sure why writers insist on using the WORLD market since many of the laptops are sold in asia where they steal everything. LOL :-)

And Apple is mostly sold only in the US and Europe. Here the numbers, expecially laptops are much higher. And I expect 2008 to be really great due to the schools adopting Macs.

Just a thought.
