Primate Labs: new MacBooks are slower

Primate Labs has taken a close look at the performance of Apple's lastest MacBook, and claims that the newest base model is slower than the previous generation. A performance comparison via Geekbench -- an application designed to test the speed of computers in various areas -- revealed higher scores for MacBooks released in early 2008 than the latest models offered by Apple. In overall performance the early 2008 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook scored 3,135 against a baseline score of 1,000, which signifies the score a 1.6GHz Power Mac G5 would receive. Conversely, Apple's late 2008 2.2GHz MacBook scored 2,890 -- significantly less than the slightly older model.

Interestingly, the early 2007 MacBook outperformed the current-generation system in almost every category. Only stream performance showed a slight uptick in performance for the latest MacBook over the 2007 model. Primate Labs concludes that the late 2008 high-end MacBooks outperform the high-end early 2007 systems, pointing to the newer model's increased processor frequency.

"Of course, the high-end MacBook (Early 2008) is faster than the high-end MacBook (Late 2007); it seems the increase in processor frequency is enough to overcome the smaller L2 cache in this case."

Primate Labs chalks up the newest base model's lower performance to Apple's inclusion of Intel's Penryn processor, which offers less L2 cache than the chips that shipped in early 2007 MacBooks.

It isn't a real speed upgrade but better cooling and longer battery life is also interesting for a laptop. We'll just have to wait a bit longer for a total redesign a la the Air. The only thing i'm waiting for at the moment is a small sub $1000 tablet, be it a small Mac or big iPod to read my comics. :)

Its got a bigger HD, which is nice. I'd be surprised if the speed difference is that much and its supposedly going to have longer battery life. It's not a huge upgrade in speed, but its probably a slightly better machine. It's just too bad apple didn't knock 50$ off the price.

to wit: " Primate Labs concludes that the late 2008 high-end MacBooks . . . "

probably the only lab to get their hands on a late 2008 this early!

better early than wait, what say?

Ultimately screwy ...

First of all, there's no such thing as a "late" 2008 Macbook because there's been only one Macbook intro'd in 2008 - the one just announced! The previous generation Macbooks introduced was back in November 2007.

Secondly, according to the benchmarks posted today from Macworld, not only is the new low end FASTER than the previous low end, it's faster than the previous HIGH end!

If you're gonna' post FUD, at least try to make SOME parts of it believable ...

Yet MacWorld and Primate Labs both ran the same GeekBench tests. Seems to indicate that something is amiss somewhere (I know, it's got to be Primate labs, for we know whoever has the more impressive info must be the correct one).

The 2.4 Ghz Penryn chip is in the base model now costing you $500 less. The only people that should be whining are those with unlimited amounts of money, in which case, they can go buy a Mac Pro.

Claiming the score is "significantly less" implies there was some statistical procedure employed. Use a different word.

Everyone does realize that Primate Labs is the developer of Geekbench and the scores were probably sent in from users, right?
