Gameloft iPhone games

Gameloft, currently one of the major publishers of games for the iPod classic, nano and 5G, has announced its intentions to both develop and publish for the iPhone platform. The news follows Apple's preview of the App Store and SDK, and announcements from other game companies, including Sega and Electronic Arts as well as Freeverse. Development teams at Gameloft are already said to be at work on some 15 titles, taking advantage of features such as the touchscreen, accelerometer and 3D processor.

Because the games will come through the App Store, Gameloft notes that they will be the first from the company to be available directly through EDGE or Wi-Fi. At present, iPod games must be downloaded through iTunes, and then synched via USB. No prices or release dates have been mentioned for any particular Gameloft title.

    Let the surge begin!

Something tells me we're going to see a LOT of new mobile games in the very near future....

    I'm excited

Part of me feels like it would be disappointing of the SDK just turned the iPhone into a games platform. The truth is, though, I'm mostly excited.

Why? I bought my iPhone knowing I'd want to do a ton of things with it, but discovered many of them after the fact-- pleasant surprises. One big thing is that I use it to amuse myself on the way to work. In an underground train... where web apps will never work. Having a lot of great games on my iPhone would make my life that little bit better.

I'm especially excited about Spore. I hope they are smart enough to let me use the same save between my Mac and my iPhone. I'd love to pick up the game and take it with me in a lighter version.
