Apple signals 100,000 SDK downloads

Apple has announced that in the first four days following the release of the beta iPhone SDK, over 100,000 downloads have been processed through the Apple Developer Connection, to which people must officially belong before they can use the software. "Developer reaction to the iPhone SDK has been incredible with more than 100,000 downloads in the first four days," reads a statement by Apple's senior VP of Worldwide Product Marketing, Philip Schiller. "Also, over one million people have watched the launch video on Apple.com, further demonstrating the incredible interest developers have in creating applications for the iPhone.”

Apple has also let slip the names of some more companies planning iPhone software. These include Intuit, the makers of Quickbooks; NetSuite, who plan to upgrade SuitePhone; and Six Apart, who are developing a native iPhone application for TypePad. Apple has also revealed that PopCap is porting games such as Bejeweled, Zuma and Peggle to the iPhone platform, while Namco is bringing updated versions of Pac-Man and Galaga.

So, if you don't officially belong, you can't use the SDK? So if bob downloads it, and I grab a copy, it won't work for me? That's weird.

Apple has also let slip the names of some more companies planning iPhone software.

"Let Slip"? It sounds like Steve was talking, and he accidentally said "You know, our developers have had no problem working on it. In fact, Joe at Intuit - oh sh*t - nevermind".

These include Intuit, the makers of Quickbooks;

Great, so does this mean we'll get a crappy copy of Quicken Mobile that pales in comparison to the Windows Mobile version? Or that they'll make a better version of quicken for the iPhone then they could do for the mac? Nah, not that. What'll be is a version of quicken whose data file is completely different then the Mac version of quicken, so converting data to your mac requires a 14 step process that may or may not work.

I was under the impression that you could DL the SDK, but you only needed to pay for the certificate fee if you want to post apps on the store. Is this not the case?

you're such a troll - I've never seen you post anything constructive.

to answer your question - you need to sign up for a free developer account to download the SDK (FYI - free = no pay). it means you can code and test on the simulator.

for $99 bucks, you can test on a real phone, and distribute your app via the 'store'

"let slip" is the authors interpretation - whether or not Apple intended to do so is not known.

That is the case. The article kind of makes it sound like 100,000 people forked over $100 each.

Constructive? Like asking questions? Yeah, asking questions is stupid. I'll make sure I tell every kid in school that.

Actually, that wasn't my question. The article makes it sound like you can't use the SDK without downloading it from Apple (i.e. it's signed and tied to a computer). I thought that sounded weird.

I already understood the free (which lets people try to figure out if its worth making apps) and the paid (which you MUST have if you plan on actually making an app).

"let slip" is the authors interpretation - whether or not Apple intended to do so is not known.

And, again, I was commenting on the article, which makes the announcement sound like a slip. It was apple's intention to make that info public (you could see one company being a 'slip', but not four or five).

re: Quicken - what's your point?

Intuit is quite known in the Mac community for offering products of lesser quality then their Windows offerings, products that are NOT cross platform, and, in general barely considered a mac developer. (All this beyond the fact that Bill Campbell is on the BOD).

And now they're going to "support" the iPhone, which has to give one pause in terms of it's quality (the app, not the iPhone).

Getting them to make the Iphone a device is a nightmare. X-code is okay, but the use of the iphone software upgrade is very difficult (I assume that the problem is in knowing how to do it). On the other hand it may not be a part of this release. The fellows at Apple help are at their typical "it is for us to know and you to find out mode". Be glad when the forums get down to business.

I know you know as much as most of us testudo. Sometimes more. And if I was a betting man, I would bet $100 you recognized the missprint. But instead of posting a correction, you chose an antagonizing way to respond to it. That's why it was referred to a trollish post.
