Native version of OpenOffice in the works?

The OpenOffice Mac porting team is reportedly working on a native Aqua version of its business productivity software suite, rather than simply porting the platform-independent Java version. The software is listed as being the third development snapshot, announcing a number of bug fixes and interface optimizations. OpenOffice says the newest version now uses a Mac OS X native print dialogue, and that extensions are installable through the improved GUI.

The latest build also features faster loading and saving, a new Start Centre, improved scroll wheel functionality, and several other fixes, while some issues are still outstanding. OpenOffice has not mentioned when the final version would be available.

really old news?

They announced this in Sept 2007. I hardly consider 6 month old announcements to be news. Apparently they are aiming at getting the final version by Sept '08. You want me to help you lift that rock up that you've been living under?

still in alpha

There is no Java version. There is a java cocoa combination interface added to the standard version that works on a Mac without requiring X11. They have been working a long time on a native version but they have little to show for it. Sounds like they are still in alpha

The current alpha is significantly improved over previous aqua releases. That is what is significant about this news.

What is significant is that OpenOffice 3.0 is in BETA now and available for download. It has NATIVE OSX installers and code now.

For all the experts explaining how this was old news, I found the article very useful as I didn't know the beta was now ready. This is a huge improvement over the last alpha's and I'm glad MacNN posted the news. I think a better title would have been:

Beta version of Aqua Native OpenOffice Available.

Yeah, with it's incredibly slow load times, incessant desire to show me some important web page, and just overall slowness, it really brings MS Office to the Mac!

The problem is...

...trying to emulate something as poorly designed as Ms Office.

I spend my valuable time in trying to stay as far away from bloatware as possible, no matter who creates it.

Excel is the only part of MsOffice that has any value
