Yahoo Messenger 7 adds phone, SMS, voicemail, more

Yahoo today announced a new version of Yahoo Messenger for Mac that introduces a number of new audio and voice capabilities. Users can now place PC-to-PC calls, as well as Phone Out/In, with a full voice message and SMS service on the Mac. By creating a Phone In account, Yahoo will provide users with a telephone number that they can be reached at from a standard phone, starting at $2.50 per month, and is available in France, the UK and US.

Yahoo Messenger can also place international calls, similar to Skype, with rates starting at 1¢ per minute. The phone out services are currently available only for US residents.

Cʼmon - this is good news no matter how late they are to the party. So far, it is only one in there, partying - Skype. I mean, for PCs and Macs alike - and havenʼt you heard they say; the more the merrier? Who knows, maybe Apple would feel compelled to bring iChat to the PC now? Or maybe MSN would add voice and video to the Mac?

The download on that link is listed as version 3.0, and its Beta 3. Which is cool, but why is it being called release 7 here? The version I've had for ages is 3.0, Beta 2. Is somebody having a happy math day?

I am unable to login in after launching the application. Anyone else? I press the login button, and the wheel spins for a few seconds, and then I get sent back to the login window.
