Apple confirms iTunes as top music retailer
Earlier reports of the iTunes Store's success are true; Apple has officially said that NPD discovered the media store's dominance over industry giant Wal-Mart during a study. The report states that Apple's 50 million customers have moved over four billion songs from the world's largest music catalogue of over 6 million songs. The study accounts for individual tracks under the assumption that a typical CD contains 12 music tracks, and based over sales in January and February.
"We launched iTunes less than five years ago, and it has now become the number one music retailer in the world," said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of iTunes. "We are thrilled, and would like to thank all of our customers for helping us reach this incredible milestone."

The Wherehouse is also all but dead, isn't it? More and more, music on physical media is something you buy only at big-box retail stores like BestBuy or Wal-Mart (big acts only) or indy record stores (only way of finding new acts or knowledgable music folks).
Small acts are going to have to learn to market themselves online or hire boutiques to do certain functions like marketing and e-commerce, since you won't be able to buy them in big stores until they are big enough to merit shelf space.
...talk about anti-competitive...
If Apple would sell as Apple Lossless without DRM I would be the first one in line. Sorry Apple (and every other service)
