iLuv i1255 DVD iPod Dock
iLuv on Tuesday began shipping its unique i1255. The device serves as a video hub with both a DVD player with 5.1-channel surround as well as an iPod dock; any compatible iPod both outputs its video to an attached TV but also receives an on-screen interface that allows users to navigate videos from the larger display. The DVD side can also support a handful of raw data CDs such as MP3 and JPEG photo discs.
The accessory maker explains that the i1255 works with the iPod touch, iPod classic, third-generation iPod nano, and fifth-generation iPod with video. The set-top box is shipping for $150.

This is kind of cool but I really don't like the whole top loading iPod thing. Reminds me of the hassles back in the early days of VCRs with top loading VCRs. Limits your options in a rack. Dating myself a bit. For you younger readers, VCRs were video cassette recorders. When they first came out you would push the eject button and the cassette mechanism would rise out of the top of the machine and you would put the large video tape in to it and it would sink back down into the machine. Dumb, right? Eventually they realized you had to be able to load tapes from the front. Not only do I not like the iPod sticking out the top for device placement reasons, I also feel that it is an accident waiting to happen. I don't think the iPod is so beautiful that it needs to stick up either.
