Apple TV 2.1 update

Apple has released a new software update for the Apple TV. The v2.1 patch must generally be installed directly from the device, but is intended to support technologies outside of the product, most notably the MobileMe online service. The nature of the MobileMe support is unspecified, but is believed to be photo sharing, as most other MobileMe content has no use on an Apple TV.

The patch additionally enables compatibility with Apple's Remote application, letting users control their Apple TV through an iPhone or iPod touch. This technology was first hinted at in earlier patents, but was never officially announced by Apple until today.

In a separate update, Apple has posted the iPhone Configuration Web Utility, in versions for Mac and Windows systems. The software is intended for corporate IT personnel, and lets users generate, sign and distribute configuration profiles through the web. Each profile contains information such as security policies, mail and Exchange accounts, and settings for Wi-Fi, APN and VPN connections. It also delivers the certificates that allow an iPhone or iPod to function on a corporate network. The Mac utility requires Mac OS X 10.5, while the Windows version needs XP SP2 or better, or the 32-bit version of Vista.
