Commercial unlock for iPhone 3G? [u]
(Updated with developer admissions) iPhoneinfused.com claims they have created a one-click solution to unlocking the iPhone 3G. Videos on the site show the software unlocking the iPhone 3G, allowing it to work with other SIM cards (T-Mobile, AT&T prepaid, and more). iPhoneinfused.com says the software works with Mac and Windows, and completes in three minutes. The company offers a 100-percent money-back guarantee and lifetime membership for $40.
The service promises free access to all updates on the iPhone 3G as part of the lifetime membership, and also offers unlimited ringtones and free iPhone apps. Downloading the software appears to be unavailable prior to purchasing the $40 membership.
Update: The company now admits that its 3G/iPhone 2.0 unlocking tool is in fact a repackaged version of PwnageTool. The software may not necessarily work on 3Gs in fact, and is presently said to be compatible only with Macs, although Windows users may be able to unlock a phone on a Mac and have the changes carry over when they sync with a PC.

In the US you can personally unlock your own phone. It is an explicit mentioned exception in the DMCA.

The phone companies have been known to sue in spite of this, and so far have only gone after folks who do things like buy thousands of prepaid cell phones then unlock them and sell them at greatly increased prices. This is understandable as the retail cost is below the actual cost in many cases and they depend on you buying additional airtime credits. Still questionable of the courts to do this given the exemption, but likely fraud or breach of contract was the true issue.
And that is just America.
If you live in many more enlightened countries they can not offer just locked phone or must unlock them at your request. You will likely pay a subsidy fee back to the cell carrier to unlock the phone. But ... that being said, as long as you don't violate the terms of any contracts you signed, in the vast majority of places around the globe, you can unlock (or grind to bits in an industrial blender) your own personal property in the form of a cell phone.
Changing the ESN / IMEI is another matter entirely. But no one asked about that...

The ad says 'legally avoid two year contracts', but exactly how, since you have to sign the contract to get the phone.
BTW, AT&T allows you to buy the iPhone for $599/699 unlocked and untied, so why not just do that.

There simply isn't any point in unlocking the phone. You can't get it at the reduced price without signing with AT&T for two years. Vast majority of unlockers did that so that they could get the phone for $400 (reduced, subsidised price) without signing with AT&T. However, 3G cannot be bought without that AT&T contract. You may, of course, unlock it and use it on T-Mobile, but you'll still have to continue paying that AT&T monthly bill (or pay early termination penalty).
It is very likely that AT&T will begin giving out unlocking instructions to all who ask for them (and are eligible). I'd like to meet a person who will then buy this tool...
