Exploding iPod nano
First-generation iPod nanos may have potentially serious faults, accounts suggest. One owner reports that his Nano was recently plugged into his notebook, and after about 10 minutes of charging, began to emit a sizzling sound. The Nano then exploded open, spewing sparks and smoke. The iPod was immediately unplugged and moved to a safer place, where it continued to smoke and spark. The issue has been reported to Apple's customer service, but is awaiting an official response and plan of action.
Other users have reported similar problems with first-gen Nanos. Although Apple has yet to disclose how common the flaw may be, if an iPod were to explode in the wrong situation, it could cause serious damage. An explosion overnight, for example, could result in an unchecked fire. If a player were to explode on a plane, it could cause panic among passengers worried about terrorism.

Anything with a battery can "explode" under the wrong conditions. How many millions of nanos were sold and how many have been reported as "exploding?" Although maybe there is a new market for bomb-proof iPod chargers.

Oh I love these articles. A potentially serious fault would be having tens of thousands of these things blowing up, not a few dozen. Its the Batterys and this will always be a issue with li on batteries. Happens to Cell phones, laptops, cameras and yes ipods.

You want to be considered a journalist, then act like one. Journalism 101. "Other Users?" How many others? Two? Twenty? Two hundred? If you have nothing to corroborate this info, or no other sources, then anything past the one incident is either sloppy reporting or rumor-mongering. Apple has yet to disclose? Gee, you seem to have a source on others, why not disclose it here? Did you have some better reason for writing this the way you did?

The scroll wheel is not from a iPod nano 1th generation. It's a fake iPod, so he shouldn't be surprise it exploded.

He wouldn't have microwaved it by any chance now would he? Then tried to scam Apple into giving him a new one by dishing out his story to the press.. Not that Macnn really counts as press these days mind.

Guys, it is an iPod nano (see docking connector, etc.), and that is the scroll wheel.
But that's not the point...the point is that ALL LiIon batteries can have these faults, and there is nothing to suggest that iPod nanos are more prone to this than any other device.
Extremely shoddy journalism and editorializing.
