Rogers iPhone users don't use a lot of data
After a great deal of public focus, Canada's Rogers Wireless has revealed that, despite the scrutiny the company's data plans see, 95-percent of iPhone customers have used less than 10-percent of their data plan. The news comes after Rogers was blasted for not including unlimited data like with AT&T in the US, according to The Globe and Mail. The figures surprise Rogers executives, who have said that the sold quantity of iPhones is "well into the six figures."
According to the figures, 95-percent of users ate up less than half a gigabyte, with 91-percent using less than 200MB. Out of all iPhone customers, only one allegedly went over 6GB of transfer.
On October 1st, Rogers will commence a new data strategy, removing the 6GB cap and instead offering 1GB for $30. It will also offer a $25 500MB plan for the majority of its users, with options for a $50 2GB plan, $60 for 3GB, and $80 for 8GB.
In addition, Rogers is implementing several new features to its data plans to ease customers' minds with accruing extraneous data charges. Data plans offered after October 1st will feature three months of unlimited access, allowing customers to gauge data usage. Text messages will be sent in subsequent months when users approach and exceed their allotments, and data charges will peak at $100, regardless of overage.

No revelation
It's not surprising to me that iPhone users with Rogers are using so little data.
I believe that Rogers has its Canadian customers trained to think that using data is bad because the more you use, the more they charge you - or so it has been up until the iPhone's introduction. We're just not used to the availability of lots of data - yet. Not to mention, 3G speeds are pretty much a joke with Rogers. Either their infrastructure stinks or they are capping everyone's speeds. Either way, it promotes frustration.
I know that with my Rogers Blackberry, most websites take forever to load and very often they fail to load (after minutes of waiting and watching the data streaming back and forth). Then, I need to re-load it all over again and hope that it will work the second time.
All that waiting and streaming of data adds up and Rogers is reaping the benefits.

Just make it unlimited. I think the reason most people dont go near 6GB is because of wireless at home and out and about or aboot.. I use the data all the time and i dont come close to 1GB let alone 6Gb.

I dont think thats true, cuz I use data on the phone all the time, so does every one I know and none of us are using more then a few hundred mb a month. And my 3G speeds have been awesome on Fido.

What's the big deal if it isn't unlimited then? As you say you wouldn't come close to it, so what does it matter?

I think that plan is pretty smart. Consider the user who only gets out of the house a few times a month to take advantage of the iPhone. In ATT land I'm forced to the unlimited plan. I can't tell what else the contract entails from this and I'm not going to find out but I like the lower rates for lower usage.

I'm glad I got in at 6 gigs, I think I might see about tethering my iPhone once I move out and use it as a modem. But yah honestly I'm still under a hundred megs though I'm using an old unlocked iPhone.

These guys are true scumbags .... First they make all the hoopla that they have reasonable rates. Then they run a promotion on the 6GB data plan (which is still more expensive compared to AT&T, because it's not unlimited, and it doesn't include Visual Voice Mail).
And now, in order to justify their own greed in public, they're saying: "See, we gave them a 6GB data plan and they didn't use it" so we're gonna cap it. WTF?
Well if they didn't use it, then so much the better for you, you stupid Rogers? Charge them for the 6GB data plan, and have all the left-over un-used data back in your pocket !!!
But oh no ... They have to gouge at every opportunity that they can ... So now they'll essentially give you a 8GB plan for 2.5 times the money of a 6GB plan. I'm not sure what Oct. 1st signifies. I just hope that with this news iPhone sales drop like a brick in Canada.
I am constantly disgusted by Rogers and I hate them to death.
