Sept. 9th event could hold 'wildcards'
Some unexpected factors could play into tomorrow's scheduled iPod event, argues Piper Jaffray. The research firm suggests for instance that it is unclear if Apple CEO Steve Jobs will be presenting, even though he usually does so; such speculation is based on ongoing rumors of ill health, originally sparked by a gaunt appearance at June's WWDC meeting. Piper says it is "confident" that Jobs will appear, however, in a move that could reassure nervous investors.
It also suggested that Apple may release a hardware update for the Apple TV, implementing features such as DVR functionality, which would place the set-top in competition with products like TiVo. Apple may also be interested in releasing audio accessories such as wireless speakers, but both this and the Apple TV upgrade are categorized as "unlikely wildcards."
Believed to be more certain are redesigned Nanos and Touches, and new capacities matched with lower prices for the Classic and Shuffle. It is also expected that Apple will not announce new MacBooks tomorrow, though a redesign is considered overdue, and may be revealed sometime this fall.

How about releasing some stinking updates to the MacBook and MacBook Pro's, Apple????

That'd be a NICE wildcard. No reason to hold a special event for refreshed iPods.

Displays??!!
I agree with you, but at least they have been getting the guts updated. I and sick of waiting for new ACDs. Come on Apple, give us some new monitors that aren't 5 year old technology priced like it's today's technology. Apple can do much better than that.

Sure Apple could update there displays, but as long as we are willing to pay top dollar for yesterdays tech then what is the hurry, margins on Cinema displays mus be some of the best in the industry:-)

Forget the displays. You can get better monitors with more features from pretty much anywhere else.
And then take a few $ that you save, cut out an apple logo, and paste it over the monitor's logo, so you don't feel like you've just cheated on your favorite company.
no dvr
Apple will NOT be adding DVR capabilities to the AppleTV. Besides the variations of broadcast TV and the extra taxes needed to pay in certain countries (I'm talking to you, England!), it would just kill their video store business. Their concept is "You buy from the iTMS, you play on the AppleTV/iPod".
This is why there's no DVD drive in the device (which would make a whole lot more sense and be a lot easier to implement).

DVR Blu-Ray
Hey Apple, how about helping me get rid of several devices at once while building your brand: Add Blu-Ray HD DVD and DVR functions like TiVo along with the existing AppleTV content access.
Wireless keyboard accessibility and a basic web browser function would be nice too. My HDTV can push more pixels than your typical Cinema Display, so why can't I check IMDB in PIP while I'm watching Turner Classic Movies?
In short, make it like a Mac Mini without the full-fledged MacOS system. Nobody (well, hardly anybody) wants to run Excel or Photoshop in their living room. But basic web & email connectivity with DVR/DVD features would be killer. You could even open it up to developers a la the iPhone apps store to expand its capabilities.
Put it at a $499 price point and they'll sell out this Christmas season.
Make AppleTV the true media hub it should've been from the start.
