What were the previous price points for the iPod Touch?

I'd really like to know what people expected from this event. It was pretty obvious that it was going to be about iPods.

I don't know why people thought it was going to include computer stuff, maybe just wishful thinking.

But I think people expected more from a "let's rock!" event. Let's rock revolved around the "new" Genius feature (which is what, mostly a way to push more sales on users). Now, if they added the ability to find iTunes users with similar music choice and allow you to play their music, that would be something.

Everything else was more video/app oriented: HD TV Shows (which really isn't 'new' so much as 'now available on your mac'), iPod Nanos with bigger screens for sideways viewing, updated iPod Touch (wow, now with a speaker!), updated iPhone/iPod OS, etc.

They started at $299 for the 8GB, and went to $399 and $499, IIRC.

Oh, and did anyone note that the Digg guy was basically correct? Maybe Verizon iPhones are around the corner! Although I think he also said that the Nano was being cut in price to avoid confusion with the iPhone, when, in fact, the Touch has dropped in price to cause even more confusion with the buying public.

How can an iPod Touch be more expensive than an EeePC on any basis, notwithstanding any doofus argument that it's somehow comparing Apples with oranges? Cupertino are enjoying as we endure staggering margins unprecedented in the consumer electronics industry (not to mention the crummy fixed price retail margins that 3rd party retailers endure). I'm not denying the freedom to buy or not to buy but at least the reality should be acknowledged, Apple stuff is way expensive, period.

Anyone who actually expected Mac Announcements today was being very unreasonable. All indications pointed to a music only event. Most rumors pointed to a music only event. The invitation pointed to a music only event.

And this wasn't a keynote. It wasn't called a keynote. It wasn't done like a keynote. It was press conference. If you expected a world shattering life altering development from something Apple made no efforts to publicize, then you set yourself up for disapointment.

As for the economic downturn, Apple is doing what it should do. Sticking to its core strengths, nice looking products with high margins. The price drops did take into account the falling component costs, or else there would be no price drops. How anyone could say apple is ignoring the economy for margins in response to price DROPS is mind boggling. Did u want it for free? There are still four iPod models and the iPhone, what price points were you expecting?

Per Apple's home page right now, you can watch the "Keynote"... So whatever whatever I'd say if Apple calls it a keynote, however weak it may have been, it's a keynote.

I'm pretty satisfied w/ my phone (Palm treo) and I just wanted the iPhone features w/o the plan. But the Gen1 iPod Touch was ugly and looked creaky. This new one though looks neat, its cheaper, has sufficient capacity (folks, you can actually remove stuff and put things back in ya know), and I just want a mobile device that lets me WIFI/Internet just like on a computer. I've tried the other devices and theirs are crappy (slow, web pages look terrible).

I don't get your point: you said this wasn't a keynote, but Apple says it was: instead of just admitting you were incorrect, you went off on some tangent about grammar and the "funnest iPod ever" -- totally unrelated to your misinformation, and totally illogical. Do you deny that Apple says this was a keynote? Do you deny that you said it wasn't?

Hmm, music players and a Nike product tie-in... While notebook PC's have the latest CPU's, GPU's, BluRay...

I was going to buy a new MacBook Pro but when I shell out that kind of money I expect the machine to be at the top of the pack, not lagging behind in features and performance.

I require a new laptop computer and it's Windows apps that are driving my upgrade. I think I'll buy a PC laptop for now, and keep my PowerBook G4 for my OSX activities. Moving to Intel was supposed to insure that Apple computers kept up with WinTel machines, but that isn't happening. They have no excuse when Macs run on the very same hardware architecture as PC's. There was a time when I wouldn't even consider a PC, but Apple has lost my customer loyalty as they've lost their focus on their core business : computers. Now they're another manufacturer of throwaway consumer electronics: mobile phones and music players.

I think Apple have got it all the wrong way round with the touch, they put a massive screen on the front of it so you can watch videos on it but it lacks tha capacity to have more than say 10 movies on it. Then they have the classic with a more realistic capacity for movies but a tiny screen.

And yet we got videos, new iPod/iPhone OS release (which is all about Apps), and a new Touch (which, despite being an iPod, is really about video and apps).

What idiot is going to go for a jog with an ipod touch? What a useless feature. Can tell they were really struggling for features to add.

You can easily fit 10 full-length .mp4 movies on an iPod Touch and have 20 GBs to spare. 1 GB per movie encoded in .mp4 should easily give more than enough room. The quality should be more than satisfactory at Touch screen size. Now, I wish I could play ten movies without having to recharge the iPod Touch battery, but that's a whole 'nother story.
