iTunes 8 disrupts PwnageTool jailbreaking

Apple has taken steps in iTunes 8 to prevent people from jailbreaking iPhones and iPod touches, claims the unofficial iPhone Dev Team. The group notes that while the jailbreaking component in PwnageTool can never be permanently sabotaged unless Apple changes its hardware, iTunes 8 has been configured to detect the Dev Team's exploit, and trigger error messages if a hacked IPSW file is being used on a device. In theory, this could prevent users from syncing devies properly without restoring firmware.

The Team says, however, that it has already released a patch that circumvents the problem for Mac owners of the iPod touch, and that future patches will support different combinations of hardware and software. A "full suite" is expected to be released over the course of the next week.

I have a jailbroken iPod touch, and iTunes 8 didn't give me any error messages. Yes, I jailbroke it with Pwnage Tool, and I haven't had any trouble before either, though I am still on 2.0. Maybe it's just the later versions having trouble?

Might be only if you have cracked IPSWs (app store apps) installed...

This may be a stupid ques

This may be a stupid question, but why would you need to jailbreak an iPod touch? Obviously I don't own one yet, but I will. I was under the impression that jailbreaking was to allow the iPhone to work on other cell phone networks, the iTouch is not a cell phone. Or is it...?

jdonahoe-

You are thinking of "Unlocking." Jailbreaking allows the iPhone or iPod touch to run non-apple-authorized apps. It does not allow an iPhone to run on a different network.

What's the point?

How do the developers expect to retain their following if with every release from Apple their user finds his iPhone use disrupted until a "fix" from the developers arrives? After a while those hacking iPhones will simply back off because the work to make the iPhone work becomes redundant. I never understood the reasoning behind hacking the iPhone. If you don't like AT&T then by God, don't buy the freakin' iPhone. It is pretty simple, huh?

We have about 5 carriers offering the iphone down here in Australia, all with very competitive plans. I bought one outright on a prepaid plan with free data upon every $50 refill. Pretty sweet deal.

Nothing to do with AT&T

Jailbreaking, as mentioned above, has nothing to do with using the iPhone on other carriers. It doesn't specifically have anything to do with the iPhone alone, as I said I have a jailbroken iPod touch. It allows you to do things Apple won't let you do with the device, such as change icons and graphics, and run applications that aren't allow. I have a one-touch Wifi on/off app, for instance. I also have five apps in the Dock, and most of my apps have custom icons. Can't do any of that with a non-jailbroken iPod touch or iPhone.
