iTunes 8 re-release

Apple has taken the unusual step of re-releasing iTunes 8 for Windows users, investigation shows. Following the original release of the software last week, a variety of Windows Vista users reported blue screen of death errors when attempting to sync an iPod or iPhone with a PC. The issue was quickly -- though unofficially -- attributed to flawed Apple USB drivers.

Official help documents now suggest that the problem can be fixed by uninstalling both iTunes 8 and Apple Mobile Device Support, and downloading a new copy of the former. Closer inspection shows that the software has been revised, but only in terms of USB drivers, which have in fact been rolled back to versions first released with iTunes in July. Significantly, iTunes itself has not been a new version number.
