Iomega reveals StorCenter ix2 NAS for home

Iomega on Wednesday announced the worldwide availability of its StorCenter ix2 network attached storage device, available in 1TB and 2TB capacities. Apart from being able to serve as a backup device for network in the home and small offices, the StorCenter ix2 can act as a media server thanks to its support of Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) and DLNA devices connected to the network. An iTunes server is integrated in the ix2 as well, which runs on EMC LifeLine software with a Linux-based kernel.

The ix2 stores files on its dual SATA II drives and connects to network via a Gigabit Ethernet connection. Hooking up peripherals such as printers or additional external drives is possible thanks to two USB ports. An optional Bluetooth dongle that connects to one of the USB ports lets users send photos, files and contacts from compatible cellphones to the StorCenter ix2. Another option includes an Axis video surveillance camera that will let users monitor offices or homes using the StorCenter as a conduit.

The StorCenter ix2 includes EMC's Retrospect Express (Backup and Disaster Recovery) software that comes with five client licenses.

The StorCenter ix2 is compatible with Windows, Mac OS and Linux PCs and supports up to two printers or external hard drives. The 1TB StorCenter ix2 Network Storage appliance 1TB is priced at nearly $300, while the 2TB version costs $480. Both will begin shipping on October 30th.
