New MacBooks, Pros sold out at several Apple stores
Apple's newly-released MacBooks and MacBook Pros are allegedly selling out globally, if sales are as brisk as they have been in at least four Apple retail stores, according to The Apple Blog. So far three flagship stores have reported outages – London's Regent Street, Toronto's Eaton Center, and San Francisco – as well as the Manchester Arndale store. Comments on the page indicate that outages are spreading to a few other stores, or at least short supplies.
Apple has not commented on the low stock levels, so it is uncertain whether this is due to high demand, low stock levels, or intentionally sending short shipments in order to create interest in the product, similar to Nintendo's tactics with the Wii.

Toronto Eaton's Centre a flagship store? I don't think so.
Boulder Apple Store
I was in the Boulder, CO store tonight for no more than 15 minutes, and saw 7 new MBs stroll out the door with their happy new owners. It was crazy in there.
Vancouver Apple Store
The Pacific Centre Apple Store in Vancouver doesn't even have any of the new MB's in stock. They said they don't know when the would be getting shipments in. I just ordered online instead.
Indy dealers...
...don't stand a Goldrush™ chance with the limiting distribution - I make a point of supporting one I feel is particularly excellent whenever I can as a result... They know me by name & offer more flexible 'swat team' service than the also excellent if 'book an appointment &/or buy procare' Apple stores...

. . . didn't the ANAL-ysts say Apple would have difficulty selling their overpriced computers?
(Though this could be to low stock, time will tell. Given the ANAL-ysts track record though I would pull a McLaughlin and say, "WRONG!"

This is just like the press to create hysteria. The same way they did the so called gas crisis.
"Oh no, I won't get my new Mac, lets go down now and get in that long line to buy my Mac"
I don't see myself trading up from my MBP to the new models, they are just so UGLY. Apple is after the PC market by making their laptops look so much like PC laptops. They are no longer thinking about us Mac users that prefer matte screens and them to be color correct.

Most of what I've read/heard from the current mac users, there really isn't a groundswell of support for the new models.
The new MBP is OK, faster, lighter. Only thing really wrong with it is the loss of Firewire 400, but it has an 800 port at least, to make up for it. It was heartening to see they figured out how to make the HD replacable (and surprising the battery is still replacable, I didn't think people replaced batteries anymore).
The MacBook has been getting killed. Apparently the consensus is that Apple wants to force a lot of the current MacBook owners into using MBPs, because they dare use the MacBook for 'work' instead of play (how dare they! Don't they know if you're using a pro application, you must buy the Pro computer!).
New buyers may come out to buy the new MacBooks, as will the sheep who'll buy anything that Apple throws at them, but a lot of apple's existing users feel used and abused (well, Apple can do that, because what are you going to do, go to Vista???).
I'm not saying Apple shouldn't try to woo new customers. But they should be careful not to piss off their long-time ones. New customers are nice, but the old-timers are their bread and butter.
(Hell, you would think you would give them what they want because they're so known to just buy stuff all the time!)
ergonomic flaw
The touchpad has a serious flaw. The pressure is drastically different at different areas of the surface. The pivot point/line is on the top. The pressure required is excessive (might as well lose that feature).
At the rest position, the human hand's index finger and thumb are just an inch or two apart. This causes the user to activate right-click or scroll (if the touch is not a swift one and drags).

I'm just about to get a new MB. I regret the loss of FW and think USB sucks in general but the new machines are lighter - the difference between the MB and the Air is now about 640g and will be better graphics-wise. I can load 4 gigs of RAM and put a faster disk in very easily. If I was a film editor I would be using a MBP anyway with FW 800. They left FW out of the ibook SE 366 too and then it returned. Maybe it will maybe it won't. But this thread seems completely hysterical about new machines, with new capabilities and more improvements. Of course they are in short supply - Apple were hardly going to fill up all their stores weeks in advance and spoil the launch. The distribution will catch up in a couple of weeks, there will be new glitches, new joy...what's the big deal? The only big change in laptop history was the release of the all-time best 12" G4 PB. I'd love it if they brought those back (updated of course) but the 13 inch is basically the same machine with widescreen anyway.
Apple like innovating and are totally ruthless about changes: SCSI is long forgotten, floppies are gone, we're all wireless...ok, so now they are heading for deprecating FW. Do people want them to stand still?
