iTunes Store adopts Movie of the Week sale

iTunes Store movie sales

Apple has introduced a new discount option in the iTunes Store, found within the Movies section. Joining the company's $0.99 Rental of the Week option, the company is now selling a Movie of the Week for $5, along with nine other movies priced at the same cost per title. The debut Movie of the Week is James Cameron's Terminator 2; some other $5 movies include Total Recall, The Karate Kid and St. Elmo's Fire.

The option parallels a $5 Album of the Week music section, which this week features artists such as Beyonce, The Clash, Miles Davis and Mazzy Star. The movie offer may be meant to bolster mediocre video sales, which have traditionally lagged behind the money brought in from audio. The iTunes Store has not brought in dramatic amounts of money as a whole, though this may be changing with the advent of the App Store.

a step in the right direction. Currently i can walk into any best buy , walmart or Target and find tons of movies for under $10, some actually $5.99. So to be able to do the same thing on the itunes store is a smart move.

of course

of course it's meant to bolster mediocre movie sales. Probably because only a small percentage of people have bought into the 'the physical media disc is dead!" argument Apple is foisting on us.

Of course, if, 20 years from now, video discs finally die, the Apple fanboys will come out of the woodwork saying "See, Apple was right! Ahead of the curve as always!"
