SketchUp 7 adds Dynamic Compnents, LayOut 2

Google has released the latest version of its 3D modeling software, SketchUp 7. The update includes Dynamic Components, and integration with 3D Warehouse. Sketchup Pro users, meanwhile, can take advantage of the new LayOut 2 presentation tools. Dynamic Components are programmed to react realistically to manipulation or editing, and will scale, animate or replicate accordingly. If a user extends a set of stairs for example, the program will add more stairs instead of stretching the distance of the existing set.

The new Component Options dialog box allows editing of Dynamic Component behavior and configuration, without the need for modeling tools. Simply clicking the mouse, the Interact tool initiates dynamic object actions such as opening a door, changing color, or moving, rotating or resizing. Any component can be dynamic, with a spreadsheet-style utility for adding behaviors.

Users can search for models in the 3D Warehouse database from the Component browser. The service, similar to Google Docs, allows collaboration between team members for projects, with tracking of contributions from each individual. An organization's styles, watermarks or components can be saved into templates.

SketchUp Pro now offers vector rendering, an improved line tool, editable paths, and redesigned geometric manipulators. Pages can be exported to JPEG or PNG format for editing or presentation in other programs. Pro also includes Style Builder, a utility for creating virtual hand-drawn sketches. Users can add to the drawings with tools such as marker, pencil, crayon, ballpoint and highlighter.

The basic edition of SketchUp 7 is now available as a free download. Pro is a paid product, and costs $495 for a single license. Quantity discount pricing is available from Google.

The best feature in this release of SketchUp is Dynamic Components. Your 3D models can finally hold onto meta-data, which means that they have become truly interactive for SketchUp users. I've found the following tutorials online to be the most helpful for dynamic components:

What they are: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aVW5X-tb8s

How to create them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsBpIPnF31A

And I found an online class/webinar I plan to attend: http://go-2-school.com/sketchup7
