Friday, November 21stiPhone 2.2 adds Street View, wide HTML mail, more [u]
Apple on Thursday unveiled the long-awaited iPhone 2.2 update, offering users a number of enhancements and additions to maps and mail, as well as several improvements to stability and reliability. The v2.2 update provides the Maps app with Google Street View, and public transit directions. Dropped pins will now show addresses, and users can share locations over email. The Mail app itself had allegedly isolated issues resolved from scheduled fetching of email, and the formatting of wide HTML mail.
Available for both the iPhone and iPhone 3G, the update features the previously mentioned direct podcast downloading over WiFi or through EDGE/3G. Safari's stability and performance were improved, as was the sound quality of visual voicemail messages. Users can press the Home button to shuffle to the first screen, when viewing any of the Home screens. At the behest of many, auto-correction during typing has received an off-switch, in the Keyboard settings.
Apple also advertises that the v2.2 update will decrease call drops, as well as in call set-up failures.

Google Street View?
Google Street View was rumored to be in the 2.2 release, but I'm not seeing it or can't bring it up. Has anyone else been successful?

I haven't tried it yet, but remember that Street View only works for locations where they've actually recorded the images for Street View, like San Francisco is always a safe bet for new Google technologies to be seen in action.
So you may have to focus on those cities to have it enable.
No StreetView for Touch
The 2.2 software update for iPod touch does not include any of the enhancements of the Maps applications found in the iPhone software update.
No iPod update?
There was talk of an iPod update that'd let you download new podcasts. No?
Push?
I thought push was slated for this release though no mention of it. So what happened to push?
Bricked
I have a passcode turned on for my iPhone (it's my work phone) and after the update, my phone was bricked. iTunes wanted me to enter the passcode to unlock the phone, but the phone wanted to connect to iTunes to reactivate. I went to the Apple Store and they had to give me a new phone.
Re: Push?
Push was promised for v2.0 in January. Then pushed out of the initial release. After that, I don't know if it has ever been mentioned again by Apple for when it will ever make it into the iPhone. People keep supposing its coming in the next release, because, well, Apple said it was going to be in there.
Then again, people keep expecting Apple to include Copy/Paste functionality, and they can't figure that out. No surprise they can't get something complicated like Push to work.
Copy/paste=low priority..
Users continue to be told that those functions are way down Apple's list of enhancements. I don't know why everyone keeps expecting it in the next update. It probably won't be included until Firmware 3.0. Why? Maybe they're going to wait until desktop Snow Leopard is ready and Mobile OSX will be a completely redesigned OS.
If you want copy/paste that badly, go buy a Storm. They have a nice touch-screen implementation of copy/paste. Apple can easily do it if they thought it was absolutely necessary, but they are following a schedule, that's all.
smtp not working in gmail
can't send or reply to any emails at all. i keep getting this error message: "the sender address was invalid." anybody else experiencing this?
