12 Days at iTunes

Apple will soon be giving away various media downloads as a way of promoting the iTunes Store, the company has confirmed. Starting December 26th, at least in the United Kingdom and France, Apple will be offering one free download every day until January 6th, as a part of its 12 Days of Christmas promotion. The exact identity of the content is unknown, but Apple describes it as varied, consisting mainly of rare singles and exclusive live tracks, as well as music videos.

In a more unusual move, Apple also intends to give away "classic" episodes of TV shows; the company does not typically offer free TV shows or movies. It is unclear whether the 12 Days promotion will expand outside of the UK and France, but such promotions frequently spread to as many iTunes storefronts as Apple can support. The upcoming promotion is intended to steer new iPod and iPhone owners towards buying music from iTunes, rather than rival sites such as Amazon or eMusic.

Apple got it right. People often forget Christmas is the first of the 12 days of X-mas not the last day. I wonder what people are thinking when they take there tree and decorations down Dec 26.
