RapidRepair 240GB iPod

Online retailer RapidRepair will soon offer an upgraded 240GB hard drive for both refreshes of the 5th-generation iPod with video. The upgrade comes in the form the 1.8-inch, 240GB drive from Toshiba introduced last year. The dual-platter drive has a PATA interface and spins at a fast 4,200RPM speed in spite of its small footprint, improving loading times over same-size hard disks.

The upgrade significantly bumps up the storage of the iPod, which was offered in 30GB, 60GB and 80GB capacities. RapidRepair is quick to point out the Toshiba drive will not be compatible with PCs, the iPod Classic or Microsoft Zune players. Installing it in these devices will result in only one platter showing up, but RapidRepair is hopeful these issues will be overcome with a future firmware update.

RapidRepair does not reveal a date of availability nor pricing information for the drive, but will offer an installation service of its own as well as a self-installation service. It does, however, offer a waiting list for the drive on its website.
